View Full Version : Gushing Valve Stem Seals Anyone?
Well.. For all those with leaky, or in my case, bleeding like a stuck pig valve stem seals, this is how your plugs look after being left in for about ten thou too long.. Makes for random stuttering and miss-firing, not fun when the missus gets the bejesus scared out of her and thinks the sky's about to fall..

if those plugs went an extra 10,000 ks
the valve stem seals are not that bad
max reliable life on a normal plug used to be 20,000 ks
do valve stem seal when you can
what brand of plug ?
NGK BP11PES or something.
Come to think of it, they may just have done 30,000..
Tell you what, a new set of plugs really smooths things out ;)

So how much does a good set of new plugs cost front and rear? Iridium is recommended for the rear, correct? Just looking at getting mine done in a few days.

well 3$ v 15$ and the only thing you'll notice is you'll change the iridiums later.

Unless you're like me and the thousands of other 6G72 owners with warn valve stem seals, then you'll just bugger them up. Plain NGK replacements are good enough, if you got enough cash floating around you can do them every service to keep 'em fresh, otherwise perhaps stick to every second or third depending on how your engine is going, if it's running sweet as, then probably every third (major service).
Rear bank of plugs is easy as for 2nd gens, 3rd gens is another thing though.
Sure it's a bit cramped if your a bigger guy, just get a mate who's of eastern origin to do those, thin arms ;).
try using a bp5ey plug may burn off some of that oil... even go a bp4ey if you can find them

Changing Spark plugs on a V6 TR/TS
you do not have to remove the inlet manifold to change the plugs
the front 3 are easy
then from the drivers side
the rear plugs 6 and 4
can be reached using a 3/8 rachet extension and plug spanner
then move to the passenger side
remove the coil support bracket
thats 3 x12 mm bolts and one 14 mm bolt
reaching the number 2 plug with the same tools
as you fit the plugs take care starting the threads of each plug then do not over tighten

hi guys, only new here
would like to know, my 6G72 has this what im lead to believe is a very common problem (leaky valve stem seals) what i am interested to know, is if the seals from the factory were not up to the task and thus buying a different brand and having them replaced will stop this from happening again, my Verada started suffering from this at 90,000kms
or if the problem to do with the design of the head not allowing all the oil to drain away from the valve stem area after say shutting the car down, and thus allowing oil seepage past the seal?
any thoughts would be great, also is it likely the valve stems themselves will be gutted or the valve giudes worn? im trying to establish what option i have is best
having valve stem seals replaced on current engine
having new heads fitted (suited to gas) to current bottom end
getting a low KM engine from the wreckers and slamming in a VRS kit

I believe the new genuine Mitsu seals are of a better material, obviously at the time of release no-one realised that there was going to be an issue with them; that said, the old ones are 12-16 years old, so even if the new seals were the same type, you should expect to get at least another 10years out of them. Plus now you would be pre-warned of the possibility, and take better care of them to start with.
Just had mine replaced, around $350.

yeah thanks mate, i understnad the old age vs kms thing, with either or being high being bad, i own a car that had the equivelant of 8thousand kms/ year done on her and things are worn out and need replacing and the car has only seen 70,000kms
My Verada was low kms for its age, but still old, and thats more so the reason i asked about the possibilty that the oil return for the head left oil sitting at the seal area causing the leak moer so then actual physical wear.
Ive got the VRS kit already but quite a lot more was quoted for the replacement.
