View Full Version : Who rewelds manifolds?
Whilst the car's up for repairs, I'm fixing the other problems that have come through too.
One of these, is the exhaust manifold's started to crack. Anybody got the name of somebody in Melbourne who rewelds them?
Fixing list:
Entire rear end!
Water leak, inspection of timing chains, and readjustment if necessary
Oil pressure sender and wiring repaired
Fix hairline crack in exhaust manifold
Either pin or reglue headlining
and find out why the ECU keeps throwing tantrums

All i can say is make sure you take it to some1 that knows what they are doing...
Not simply just welded up. Manifold needs to be PRE heated and then welded with the correct cast iron rods.... if not it will crack as soon as it statrs to cool.
Good luck!

Muffler bandage?
Failing that, buy a good looking set of headers from a wrecker.. should be like $20.
Cost!
Like, $44 from UPI. But you're not in SA. :P

Muffler bandage just makes a mess and lasts about 5 minutes.

Or just buy another manifold off a first gen with no heat sheildlol :P :D
I think madmagna has a mate with a tp parts car that you might be able to buy one off it. shoot him a pm and see what he says.
For future reference, these are the only repairs done to the car
New radiator, hoses and thermostat, cooling system flush
New fuel filter and oil filter, oil flush
2 new tyres
New wiper blades, a brake light bulb, and swap the parker over with one of my spares.
Total cost, was $65 for the radiator, $15 for the thermostat, $10 for the bottle of glycol, $30 for the fuel filter, $10 for the oil filter, $10 for Safeway's Finest Cheapest motor oil to flush, $66 for the two Yokohama A539s, and $12 for both wiper bladess.
Not included is current repair costs, I'll add them later.

Its best not to add up all the money you have spent or it will be bugging you all the time lol
Now turning this into my rebuild thread. Sorry, no photos, I have no access to a camera.
Today's stuff:
Dropped the rear suspension, cursing 57-odd siezed bolts. Both rear cailpers need rebuiliding too, as expected, the driver's side didn't survive the fall. Hopefully this'll alleviate the lovely issue of "Handbrake? What handbrake?":bowrofl:
Also, took apart the intake manifold, the corrosion's only on the fittings, won't need to swap the head, as the jackets appear in similar nick. This motor's approximatly 80-120,000km old. Apart from replacing gaskets where we've taken stuff off, and the welch plugs, no other work on the short motor will be needed, or performed.
Took the opportunity, whilst the rear seat is out, to really clean up the interior.lol

Ummm please explain, what did I miss here, what fall
I had a wheel bearing seize when I was over the wrong side of town. It failed totally whilst I was slowly getting the car home, and the wheel came adrift, fortunately at 5km/h.
Whilst I'm fixing that, I'm fixing a few other wear and tear items that are expected in a 20-year old car.
Handbrake cables are a ***** to remove! They're all good now!
Tomorrow's hit up the wrecker, for a car or 4 to donate their rear suspension and brake assemblies.
Rear axle, including brake calipers and rotors
Two rear suspension assemblies, these are Pedders, and are in excellent nick
Uncracked exhaust manifold, with new oxy sensor fitted
Recently replaced waterpump
New accel cable for Cruise control.
Replacement cooling system fittings.
Guess how much?
$150 for the lot :D

I know where I can buy a whole first gen for that much lol
Yeah, but you're going to need to replace those parts on a $150 first gen...

It's back on 4 wheels! It still runs, but it sure won't stop! (calipers are still getting rebuilt, kits arrive late tomorrowish.)
Tomorrow's duties include fitting the interior back together, except the centre console.
