Hi all
I just purchased a late 2000 model KJ Verada, and am wanting to do an engine oil change. What specific oil would you guys recommend? I was going to go with the good old Castrol Magnatec?
My car has done 148,000km if that makes a difference (I'm pretty sure it will) concerning which oil I should use.
Cheers!

it was covered recently
10-40 synth is a good starting point
5-30 is factory fill but a lil bit light, esp now that summer is here..

Agreed
the Mobil Synth 10w-40 is a good oil to use and a few members are using it. Tried it myself in my TF and didn't mind it.
if you want something with a broad viscosity spectrum then you can try the Mobil 1 5w50 full synthetic, though i had a mechanic (Kmart Tyre & Auto) that old me the oil would be too thin for my age of it ages (180000km) at the time, i had been using that oil since about 160000km with no issues eg, no smoke, no ticking on cold start ups, no oil leaks. Off course the Mobil 1 option is a premium option compared to Mobil Synth
Mobil 1 is about $60 a bottle and Mobil Synth is about $30-$40 (its been a while since i bought one)

I use Motul Turbolight 4100 10w-40 in my KJ. No problems.

So the consensus is that pretty much any 10w-40 oil will be the right one for my KJ with 150,000km on the clock?

Just called the local Mitsubishi dealership, spoke to some guy in the servicing dept. He recommended Shell Helix Plus 10w-30. Might give it a go :)

Got 5L of Magnatec (10w-40) for $26.95 on special and a genuine Mitsubishi filter for $18. Should do the trick.

I got the same oil today, but just grabbed a valvoline filter, gonna give it its first oil change in my hands tomorrow.

Yeah, the required Valvoline filter was $16.95, for which I thought was a bit rich. Worth the extra $1 for a genuine Mitsubishi one me thinks :D
EDIT - Anyone know where the oil filter is located in my engine bay? I have a 2000 Verada KJ. Thanks!!

It's underneath the engine. if you go under the front of your car on the drivers side and look up it hangs upside down on the front side of the motor to the left looking rearward. Confused now cause I am  .
I now find it easier to take the front drivers wheel off and remove the plastic gaurd to access both oil filter and sump plug. note once the wheel is removed level the car and chock it before draining sump. this might sound like a lot of stuffing around but it saves my back trying to crawl round under the car.

are you serious?? it takes me about 8 mins to service mine.. no jacks.. nothing special.. just a $9 filter tool remover and a socket..
spose if you have a bung back.. u might have to take the longer way round it.. maybe a creeper and some car ramps? not the crazy 10ft tall ones.. just some to lift a few inches.. and slide under undo plug, drain, filter change, plug back in.. all while your under there for say 3 mins.. ??

Did mine today, used ramps as they help with the draining because the sump plug is at the rear of the sump. (3.0)

The actual draining process took quite some time as it was trickling out for ages, around 10 minutes!
The filter isn't hidden at all, i had two filter wrenches that were too big to grip on it, so i had to bash a screwdriver in to lever it out! Made a bit of a mess though..

as long as the car is at operating temp before you service it.. 99% of the oil drains in the first 50 seconds of taking off the sump plug..

I think everyone knows to drain oil when car is hot, just pours out quicker.

On the topic of Engine oil I have produced a list of engine oils for all the magnas if you bother to search.
Otherwise, ANY semi-synthetic grade brand is possibly alright for your car for magnas of the 3rd gen. Use a proper engine flush fluid to give it a clean state. And pour the "Recommended" amount stated in your manual. Of course change your oil filter as well. They dont cost more than $15.00 for one. Whether is orginal oil filter or not, is the same thing, you can blow your money with K&N stuff it still just filters the oil.
If you are totally in doubt, then send it to a mechanic to have it sorted out for you.

Which is why some people wear gloves when you release the nut, or use a cloth.
If your nut is worn, buy a new one.

Somethings some people take for granted that everyone should know about. Changing car oil is one of them.
I have come across Valvoline Synergy at The Warehouse, a 10/40 for $18.50 and Big W for a $12 Ryco filter. Oh, and a pack of 5 garden gloves for $3 helps get around the hot oil issue.
The best thing about going under the car is that you can take a torch and whilst your waiting for the oil to finish draining, check for oil leaks, drive shaft boots and general condition. I did this and found i had some fur burning on the exhaust which accounted for a smell in the car. Flesh does that. Oh next door neighbours cat had gone missing.lol

I use Castrol Edge 5w-30. 5W-30 is what Misti recommends for my 3.5
