hello

yday i installed my new hood lining so i threw in my front verada map lights dodgily.

There were 2 wires (1 red 1 red w/ white stripe) running to my main interior light one had constant 12v other had no voltage although i didnt check if it was ACC. What would it be as the lights are grounded to the chassis.

So i spliced the constant 12v (red) and ran one back to the red i cut it from and the other straight to the BARE positive plug WITHOUT THE PLUG THERE. As Paul mustnt have put it or had it in ages ago. lol **** you Paul

I didnt have any solder left and couldn't find any heat shrink so i twisted wires together and duct taped!!.

So anyway the result is my interior fuse blowing. Every time i put one in it goes. Disconnect the dodgey connection to the front map lights and it stops.
Yet now only the main interior rada light works and the 2 side ones do Not (on the centre one).

-So would this mean going and buying some solder and heat shrink meaning it's shorting on the chassis underneath the hood lining.

-Or doing the same but finding a plug for the front map lights.

cheers
aj

also damn the whoa jesus handles are very annoying to put back in...

Didn't quite follow how you wired it there.

But what you want to do is wire constant to the spade plug. The lights are grounded through the metal bracket; DO NOT connect up the other wire, this is the "door open" power supply.

Your center light has two supplies, a constant so you can turn it on at any time, and a "door open" supply so the light can automatically turn on when you open a door.

The map lights, having their own switches, want a constant power supply so you can turn them on whenever, as it looks like you realise.

So ill have to get the plugs... haha i need one for a cigarette lighter too gamin.

Does the plug for the map lights just have a single wire and could i get suitable plugs from an electrical store as oppose to the wreckers? (don't want to end up buying another set of lights)

Also why no 4 wire directly to a spade connection? for future reference although it does seem dodgey to me...

Thanks

ps yeah wiring is hard to explain. Sorry

For almost all car wiring the car body itself is used as a big ground wire. So you just need to supply the one wire for power, and connect the ground to a good metal contact on the body, which in this case is the metal bracket screwed to the roof.

Pretty sure the spade is just a standard spade, just need a female spade socket for your wire. Could hardwire it in place (ie. solder the wire to the exising spade connector, but makes it a pain if you ever need to remove it or remove the liner again.
Could always just pocket one at the wreckers...:shifty:

So in summary; tap a wire off the one that has constant power, put a female spade connector on it (hopefully should be standard), bolt the lights to the roof to supply the earth, and connect the female to the male (I fell all weird now  ) for positive power. Press button to test!:D

But what does the red with white stripe wire supply for the centre light? It grounded to the chassis as most small accessories are.

PS the other lights in the centre decided to start working  All in looks great just have to get these lights working.

thanks

Bugger, sorry, I tell a lie  . On looking at the circuit diagram, the second wire provides an earth only when a door is open.

The red (black-red according to the manual) wire provides constant +12V. When you turn the middle light's switch to "on", it earths through to the bracket, giving you light at any time.

When the switch is at "door", however, the earth is diverted to the red-white wire, which only completes the circuit when one of the doors etc is open.

So the red (or red-black) provides all the power. The light circuit can then either be earthed directly to the roof, such as with the map lights or the centre light in "on" mode, or earthed via the red-white wire in "door" mode through a door switch.

If you have the service manual pdf, check page 1122. Sorry for the confusion, I honestly thought there were two power supplies, both earthing via the roof.

PS. you should find that the red-white wire won't ground to the chassis when all doors etc are closed. It will ground when something is open.

**** you too AJ

If i can remember right, i just ran one red wire to the front lights?
middle one should stay the same i think....

anyway, you suck at wiring
