well since i had a spare bonnet lying around (after having a crash) and seing MADTS custom bonnet. i decided to start and butcher my old bonnet. this is what came out of it. its very similar to evo 7 bonnet vents.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc24/magna1995/prototype2.jpg

so ive decided to make my good bonnet the same, as i still need to get it sprayed. the one above is going to be a prototype, so if theres any probs i havent wasted a bonnet. once i get my new front bar and the bonnet made and it all sprayed it should look mean.

i just hope that i can pull it off on the real one, and that the proto isnt a fluke.

interesting style, are you going to leave gaping holes or putin actual vents in there. also even if you do something like mesh it up how are you going to stop water getting in etc. keen to see the progress as it is made

my opinion is make a fibreglass scoop. But dont try to fix it to the metal as itll never take. Maybe pop rivet it as thatll allow for different expansion and then overlap the metal over the fibreglass.

A few of us 2nd geners will have the need for one in the future hopefully.

itll be vents not a scoop. i like the look of evo6-7 vents thats why ive gone this shape.

as for the water ive already thought of that. im getting a 1mm thick galv plate made. that will be fitted under the vents to guide the water away. also will be using fine mesh so as little water can get in but still look the goods. and for around the edges will get thin rubber that slides over the edges.

Your putting all this effort in for a SOHC 3L V6? or are you planning on doing the DOHC conversion?

hey just curious i know this is prob the wrong thread and but didnt deem it important enough to start a new one. are all fibre glass bonnets ilegal ? if so is it for the same reason as carbonfibre ones the whole slicing of head thing ?

and also luke why are they at the wrong end of the bonnet to me they seem to be in a good place as im sure u all no hot air rises and the vents are at or close to the highest point in the bonet so therefore the VENTS would let out the hotest air

I think what lucy is refering to is the intake of colder air. hole needs to be closer to the front near the air box.

the purpose of a vent is to vent not scoop pretty self explanitoy

TR Driver is correct.

Look at Evo vent... look at proposed vent here... proposed vents are on the other side of the bonnet compared to evo, this will (and does) look rather odd.

And you are both incorrect. :) These vents will extract hot air from the engine bay and reduce the pressure build up in the bay. This will allow easier flow of cooler air from the front grill/bumper.

Bonnet scoops are only good for intakes into and around air boxes, they are not designed to cool the motor. The EVO vents sit further forward because they run 4 cylinder engines that are usually closer to the front of the car, their exhaust manifolds are at the front of a car.

His car is a V6 so you also have to worry about the heat generated by the rear exhaust manifold. The placement of the VENTS are perfect. lol

I am aware of that, I'm pointing out that they look odd when the original evo vents are at the other end of the bonnet :)

I never said i agreed. just that is what i thought he was aiming at saying.

I do think that you will need to do more than just put sum vents in the hood. i mean make the style flow over the whole car or it will look silly.

I wanted to do this but i cnbf as the rest is pretty stock looking.

1- the vents are positioned there coz its the best position regaurding the bonnet frame (wont make it as weak).

2- most bonnet vents are positioned over the manifolds as the heat will get sucked out quicker.

3- scoops are used for top mount intercoolers i.e. suburu

4- i have a after market front bar on its way so it will help with styling.

5- that trampolin was one of the most useful christmas presents ive recieved. i use as a bench so i can paint things, work on car parts etc. it has served us well. lol

hmm doesnt look as bad as i thought it might have, will reserve judgement until its done, how are you going to finish it? just tack mesh under it or put an edge on the sheet metal or what? what kinda front bar are you getting?

White
23-12-2007, 01:02 PM
putting rubber around the edges, gluein mesh underneath it. the front bar is suppose to be similar to a stock 200sx bar but i ordered the bar over 3 months ago but still hasnt arrived and i keep reminding the asv bloke to hurry up. i was going to take the car to the paint shop this week but no bar no paint.

[TUFFTR]
23-12-2007, 02:10 PM
I give you credit, Does not look too bad at all, but ill have to wait until the whole car is one color!

Thought about making the number plates black? the red jumps out too much.

Overall, good work. something different!

So there is a water catcher/drain at the back of those holes? looks like you have welded a plate underneath or something? what am i seeing below the holes there? is it removable? As long as you can clean it ok lol

Nice looking work so far good luck with it. Just don't go cheap on the mesh or it will look poor imo. (Been there, done that)

And also, seeing that, wave goodbye to having that bonnet and a GTO engine. They'll hit so the bonnet will have to go.

White
24-12-2007, 01:28 PM
yes i got a plate made up that is screwed to the bonnet frame. so it is removeable. im not getting the $20 mesh from autobarn im getting some resonably fine mesh so it should look ok.

as for the gto engine that idea went out the window along time ago.
the future plans are manual conversion, cams and then twin snails. should be enough for what i want a car for ( dragging commos and falcoons).lol

so your plan is to twin turbo it and put cams in? you sure this is a plan and not just some idea? thats quite an expensive thing to do

iv started making the rear pipe that goes from the rear manifold around to top of the trans (were rear turbo will be located) and the pipe that will return to exhaust.

as for the cams rpw make them for about $1000

well i got my car back from the paint shop yesterday and finished of my vents. since my aftermarket bar never happened i got a series 2 diamante bar instead.i fitted 380 foglights to the bar as the bar didnt come with it. also put mesh in it.

all up the vents cost me about $30.
the bar cost me $100 as it was pretty rough.

it looks like a totally different car now. i love it.
