View Full Version : Oil-ish smell?

Hey guys just wanted to get your opinion on something.

My KE Verada sporadically makes a smell like burning oil or fluid - only problem is, the levels on the dipstick for both the transmission and engine has not moved at all. Are there any components that might bleed oil that would not register any change on the dipsticks? It has recently been serviced (April) and had the following done:

- replaced camshaft oil seals
- fixed leak in sump
- sealed rear cam o ring
- replaced engine oil and filter
- replaced transmission fluid and filter
- changed coolant
- replaced drive belts

I'm a bit worried as the work was not cheap and i can't really afford huge repairs.

oil and crap still on the engine from the repairs. Burning off when the engine gets hot.

vapors out of the oil filler cap or Pcv clogged

isn't it hidiously overdue for an oil change if it was done way back in april?

sorry for the off topicness..

Umm the power steering level is the same as after service, the master cylinder shows no sign of leakage which is good. I hope it's just spilt oil on a hot part of the car - fingers crossed.

How do I check the other things like the pcv? Im not sure where or what that is.

No i'm glad you said that man, i'd forgotten . It goes in for fluids and filters next week. Is there anything I should get the mitsubishi mechanics to check while it's there?

front rocker cover gaskets are renowned for leaking.. not pouring out oil.. but weaping.. maybe as it weaps down the front of the head it sits on the ex manifold and when it's hot.. it burns off..

i had this problem in one of my corolla's.. i spilt oil (dam brand new bottles!!) down one of the heat shileds.. and it kinda soaked into the fiber glass stuff that surrounds it.. and ever now and then over a few weeks you could smell it burning off when you come up to a set of lights just after a decent run..

Is this an issue to be rectified or just something to take for granted?

It had 119000 on the clock when i bought and serviced it and since then have put on 7000km.

thats not to bad most people do there service anywhere from 5000-15000 but around 5-10 is best or when ur oil get to dirty for your liking

the rocker cover gaskets yeh replace them.. but i wouldn't be suprised if they start to leak in 30 thou again..

you will be able to tell if its them.. when it's cold.. wipe your finger above the exhaust manifold.. or around the side of the head near the top radiator hose..

having said that though.. mine had a crazy build up of gungy oily dirt there and i just took it to the carwash let some $1 can of degreeser from supercheap soak while i washed the car.. then apply a bit more degreaser.. plastic pot brush.. and gernie off with the high pressure soap, then water.. and the thing has stayed clean ever since!

Yeah the rear rocker cover has a grimy leak on it - it looks as though it's been there a while. There doesn't seem to be any on the exhaust manifold and I can't see into the front bank because I didn't take the plastic guard off.

On that note, how much oil will I bleed out of the rocker covers before i notice any change in the engine oil level? And more importantly, is this a serious problem? I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to engines.

On a lighter note, I had a chat to one of the mechanics at the local mitsubishi place and he was of the opinion that magna engine oil is best replaced every 7500 km to keep everything sludge free - maybe he's just trying to get more of my business!

mine lucky if it's in there for more than 4500-5000... and i never have any issues with lifter noise.. i replaced my old TH rocker covers.. had the car for 50 thou (replaced them at 210 000) and the inside of it looked like a brand new engine.. only a very very light gold/brown.. no junk in the corners.. and still using 15w oil..

if the rocker cover gaskets leak do the following.

Replace, and seal with Permatek Aviation No. 3. Do not overtighten. You only need to do the bolts up till they contact the rocker cover and then maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn to place some pressure on the sealing surface. No 1 cause of them leaking is over tension.

mines the same and has been for a while.
i had it look'd at and he replaced the seals and all was good for 20 thous km's but it's back again.
tends to only really do it after i've been givin it a bootfull but doe also do it after longer trips.

oils never seems to move so it can't be much, just enough to make it to the headers......

The only occasion that I've had this sort of smell was when I forgot to re-connect the hose from the front rocker cover to the pcv.

Check for hoses not connected particularly the ones from the rocker covers.

check under the engine where the gearboxand the engine meet.

Ok checked the transfer case for oil and both rocker covers for loose hoses and they are both ok. There is grime on both of them but it looks to be very old. The rocker cover gaskets might have leaked in the past but it seems that everything is ok now.

The f*$% of the thing is that it hasn't made the same smell since or any smell for that matter. Thanks for the help guys, it appears to just be old oil heating up, as I've looked for new haemorrages but can't find them. i have the mitsu guys looking at it next week to confirm (and do fluids and filters) so I am at ease.

Cheers!

there is no need to use glue on the cover gaskets other than where the cam runs through the ends on some motors.

only use a small amount of super glue to hold the gasket to the rocker cover.

Permatek Aviation No. 3 is a gasket goo, come out liquid sets as a gasket. It's not glue.

so what your saying is use it instead of replacing the gasket?

matty.c

apply to the new gasket :)

If your installing a new gasket to ensure that it fully seals you can use a very small amount of gasket goo.

Be warned though, IT WILL NOT BREAK DOWN if it gets in yout engine it will block EVERYTHING. Just use a small ammount you don't want it dribbling out the side.
