Hi all,

I currently have the standard Kj headunit with the 4 stack in-dash cd. Last week, I replaced the crappy old stock 6X9's with a set of Pioneer 3 ways. Made a signficant difference to the sound - much better bass and treble although still nothing to write home about.

Based on the quality of the original 6X9's, I am thinking I should replace the door speakers. I plan to keep the stock tweeters. Does anybody know what size the front door speakers are on these.

Want to keep things pretty simple (no amp) and on a budget of around $100. So any recommendations?

Louis

a set of 6 1/2 inch speakers will fit in the nicely. a $100 dollars won't get you munch for a set of splits. I've seen in autobarn a set of pioneer 6 1/2inch 3 ways for $68 they would sound all right

Theres some Sony 6" Splits for around $100 at Strathfield, some Pioneers for $130ish.

Edit: Found the page http://www.strathfield.com.au/images/Catalogues/20071203/JPG/p14.jpg

How exactly do you plan on keeping the stock tweeter? Don't they all wire in as one?

Those (Sony) aren't true component speakers. The 'crossover' is a capacitor just like any old coaxial... And they are sony :doubt:

Hi

I was thinking may be a good dual cone or 2 way speaker. Just want to incrementally improve the base and midrange coming from the door speaker slightly. Current speakers distort too much.

Do I need a 6 inch or 6.5 inch to fit there (having regard to the door trim?).

What about buying a midrange/bass speaker (say from JayCar) and fitting a filter on the wiring to drain out the low range, which will continue to come out of the 4 tweeters (the stock fronts are not a true split set up - the current door speakers also put out the low range and don't seem to have a low range filter).

Any further thoughts?

It will be the deck that is distorting your front speakers. The fronts are usually dual cone splits that have more midrange than stage speaker! You will find if you replace the fronts without an amp you will loose bass and midrange i promise. I replaced the ones in my old rada with pioneer splits and i had a clarity boost but a bass drop. I'd look towards adding an amp to your system if you want to replace the fronts.

Hi Fantaysia

what about if I replace the current dual cone speakers in the door with a better set of duals cones such as pioneer? do you think that would work?

I honestly think your deck is the bottle neck. Unless your front speakers are faulty i probably wouldnt bother. To answer your question though it would probably sound the same.

Not sure if im the one to be posting here, seeing im what one would call, an "audio Junky". However, I doubt you could get a decent set of splits for $100, brand new. Maybe go down to Stratty, and JB, and have a listen to a few sets, and let your ears decide if its work spending that little bit extra. It all depends how crazy you are on audio I suppose.

Next is the amp, some speakers wont sound to bad off the headunit, however, if its bass your after, then an amp is really what you need. I dont belive I have personally ever heard a set of speakers run of the deck with snappy midbass (they may exist, but i have never heard it).

You could probably get for $500, a set of splits, and an amp. Tweeters in Sail Pannels behind stock covers, midbass ofcourse in doors. Amp can be velcrowed (sp?) under the seat.

How does that sound ? Audio that will sound quite nice, for still, a decent price

ar3nbe I thought you where still in rehab :bowrofl:

Only half decent splits around $150 they I have heard are the *gulp* Alpine Type S and Hertz Decei 165's. If you are thinking of amping them in the future then I would mount the tweeters in the kicks.

Forget dual cones. There will be nothing wrong with running splits off headunit power. If the splits efficiency is high, you deaden you doors and the headunit has an inbuilt HPF you can get some good results. Of course, running them off an amp will reap the full benefit of your speakers :D

Ill agree. Unfortunality theres not much you can do with the stock headunit. Even very expensive speakers will sound like poo :(.

Perhaps upgrade headunit aswell ?

haha i think Louisk gets the message :) .... well to add something usesful sticking to your original budget of $100 .. even an entry level deck will boost your existing speakers a great deal. If you can wait .. save up and get a good deck, but if you want an instant 100 buck upgrade (providing you can install the deck yourself or bribe someone to do it) then an entry level pioneer deck will be a ten fold upgrade on the stock system. Note: you will need a pocket to be installed also if your current deck is the double din type.
