I've just moved to the north of Brisbane (46km as the crow flies) to Bribie Isl. I am now an Islander lol
The drive to work, Brisbane Airport, is around 50 mins, give or take roadworks, traffic, speed cameras, etc etc..
Today, despite my crap AFR (10:1), I achieved 8.8 l/100km!
Looking forward to when I get my car tuned with an interceptor and that figure gets even better :)

Damn that's good man. I used to work in Rothwell once a week, driving down from Nambour (50 minute drive) in the Ralliart and it would get anywhere from 8.2-8.8. If I drove at 100km/h instead of 110km/h it would get 7.6. You should notice a big difference with the tune.

You are doing real well getting 8.8l/100k's even if they are freeway km's!!! Whilst on the subject of AFR's, can you get it leaned out a bit without getting a chip? If so, what kind of workshop can do it? (I'm guessing Ultratune wouldnt be at the top of the list) And finally, whats the chances of getting a check engine light after raising the AFR a little?
Damn! 8.8l and below sound great.
I've got a stock setup as the intake & airbox still says "on order".
Exhaust for when I get back from an overseas trip for half the year (see you all mid '08!).
Just did like about 1500km to brisbane and I got 9.3l/100km. This was using the bruce highway with multiple high engine revs when overtaking freakishly long trucks. Oh yeah, running premium 98Octane too.
Guess those mods to help the engine breathe better are definitely worth it, and not just for the feel of the performance! Either that, or the bad road quality and hills was just affecting my economy. Still got a trip to Syd and Mlb to do - I'll post if there are any big changes (bruce highway sucks).

That's about right for stock auto. The best mileage I got for mine when stock was 9.6 and that was only because my GF was driving it!
The 8.8 was achieved with a couple of blats in there passing some slower cars on single lane roads, so, yeah, the mods are not only giving us power but much improved economy if you can keep your foot off the pedal enuff

That's insane. One of a kind , the Ralliart.
I'm hoping my economy will get better with the interceptor but it may not, because in cruise mode I think the ECU goes into closed loop and you get the O2 sensors checking the mixture constantly anyway.
I just checked with a mate here at work with a XR6T and the best he got Brisbane Sydney return was 10l/100km (he drives like an old woman).

Ask Scotty about his XR6T fuel economy. Averages about 19l/100 around town (it's stock) and 10-11 on the highway.

I'll be going on a run at Christmas to visit the family so will see what sort of economy I get on the highway with all the mods. Pipes are still running black. :doubt:

I just drove from melbourne to sydney, and got along the lines of like 8-9l/100k i was seriously impressed i filled it once inbetween and the trip computer (if it is to be believed) was telling me i would get about 710k to the tank, i was seriously suprised.

Yeah i had that driving around town, but as soon as i hit the highway seriously it went down quick smart.
Around town all the stop start driving is gonna suck that juisce down like there is no tomorow.

I have really mixed results.
Highway @ 8 per 100 toting the family. Can get this easy and below only on a motorway.
Sunday backroads 10 per 100 taking it easy a few lights and 60-80 kmph.
City ( No freeway ) 14 ish.
Assertive City 16's.
I could keep it below 11 for everyday but that would take extreme control and I hate looking at the back of volvo's.
Brisbane traffic sucks, I will get the gas conversion in the first half of next year.

Just cruising around on the weekend (no weekday work driving at the moment), in manual I was getting mid-13s, but with the new rear muffler I can't help jabbing the loud pedal all the time, so my fault.
Then driving more sensibly and in auto-mode, I got down to low 12s.
If I take it to work (110 on M4) I can get low 11s - but that's about the best I can get at the moment.

I cant believe you guys are getting under 10! the best ive ever got was 10.3 on a 1600km to north qld last year. mind you i wasnt under 110 very much, does it make big difference on 100(2500rpm) versus 110(2900rpm) in the 5sp man.

These posts make for some very interesting reading. It would appear the guys with manuals (Type 40, vrx boy & myself) cant get under 10 or 11 however a few of the auto's can get 8 - 9. What happened to manuals being more economical???????

yeah i thought manuals where better on juice as well what revs does the auto sit on at 100 and 110? maybe the auto is taller geared?

actually since fitting the 90mm intake and cleaning my k&n filter which had a years worth of bugs and dirt in it, my around town fuel usage has dropped to mid 11's where as before it was mid 12's, and iam actually driving it harder? I also got the service dept to sort out a bad flat spot in the rev range above 4grand, so it's probably a combination of all these things anyways it's going really hard now!

I have logged all the fuel on mine since purchased in June. Will post up the info once they renew laptop at work on tuesday. Have had 8's (M1 to Yatala from logan) but mostly around 9, 10's (Logon to Rocklea ,traffic) and then some times i must get a tank of crap cause it jumps. this is using 91 oct as fuel card wont allow 98. Am going to bundaberg after xmas towing 1.2 tonne camper so am interested what that does to it.
Rear muffler going on this Saturday so i should see any differance in economy. but as you have all said that the load pedal gets used more after the mods :)

4.11 diff gears in the manual! Thats the problem. They need to be the same as the auto in my opinion. Reason? The 3.8 has good torque and not so good revability therefor using the torque to motivate the car through taller gearing would have little performance detriment than using the current diff ratios. Why not just run the diff ratio out of a Magna? The only difference between the 380 box and a Magna (3.5) box is the final drive ratio... All other gears are identical.
Just think of the fuel economy benefits! :D

VRX BOY...do you know what they did to eliminate the flat spot? Also, did the K & N become an issue with the service dept ie was it fixed under warranty?

they said nothin about the k&n filter, so no worries there. As for the flat spot it kicked in around 3800-4000rpm very annoying and above that it wouldnt rev very smoothly, so i mentioned it to service last week and they said "we know what that is, we will give her a tune up!" And now it's running great!, does your's have a flat spot?

Mine doesnt have a flat spot however when I ran the K & N with the original intake (I now have 90mm intake & standard filter), there was a slight flat spot.
Re yours, I'm curious to know specifically what they did (what was causing the flat spot?) Was it fixed under warranty? I just wonder if Type 40 is aware of this....although he hasnt indicated his has a flat spot, its not running properly & perhaps Mitsubishi have an answer for him?????

i'm by no means even close to knowledgable on cars .. but has the flat spot got something to do with the slight delay in the electronic throttle? .. When I plant my foot it seems like hours pass before the car kicks into low gear and takes off ... like its waiting to see how far my foot goes before it decides to go. Then I fight the steering wheel to keep it straight :P
EDIT: I am getting around the 11 mark now for the topic

As with most cars you'll find some modding will fix the delay.
I found the K&N filter with the 90mm intake, in particular, got rid of the lag to a large degree.

Yeah they fixed it under warranty no probs; as to what it was iam unsure as i was away 4 work and my flat mate took it in for service. Now my brakes are sqeaky and iam have a **** fight with them about that, they are really bad stopping power is good they just are really noisy and they last two times they havent fixed the problem properly.

There is a delay built into the software when you touch the throttle and the throttle body opens. Via editing the computer or fitting aftermrket ones you can reduce this delay, but it will always be there to an extent due to nothing directly linking the throttle to the engine. The EXEDE interceptor is the way to go for this car

Ok cant seem to put up the total table so will give best and worst fuel economy
8.6 km/L / 11.63L/100
10.16 km/L / 9.84 L/100
This is mixture of highway and city
Rear Muffler goes on tommorrow so will see what that does.
cheers and have agreat xmas

well, what about the economy with mixed driving? i'm looking into getting a new car, and i hvae narrwoed down to the 380, SV6, and Avalon. fuel economy isnt a big issue to me,but i'm still quite keen on getting to know the figures on the 380.

As usual, depends how you drive it. The worst I've ever got which was when doing performance runs on the dyno (15 runs) was in the 14's (14L/100km).
However, in a more normal drive; recently I was in Brisbane city in traffic, 30 degrees, with four people in the car with a/c on; 11.6L/100km (but not punting it).
The quoted figure of 10.8L/100km is easily acheivable for the auto and easily bettered as per my first post. Economy gets better with more modding (less restrictions).

I've never got anywhere close to that figure. In a couple of the days the family & I are heading down to Kiama (about 2 hours south of Sydney) so I will re-set the trip computer & see how I go. Based on what you guys have been getting, I will be disappointed if I cant get under 9ltr/100km.

Yep I was impressed, I haven't been on a run since I put the extractors on & the thing that gets me, is around town it's almost double. Knotched is getting pretty good figures around town it seems, can't wait to get this computer done. Should improve highway figures & definately around town as I think they're pretty ordinary at the moment!

Just got back from a trip down to Kiama (NSW south coast). Two adults, 2 kids & luggage in the car and travelled at 80 - 100kms for most of the trip with the air on. I averaged 8.5l/100k's & I drove the car like a Grandpa all the way.
I think the best I got on a trip in my old TH under similar circumstances was about 8.3 so I'm very happy. It would appear the muffler & intake have made a significant improvement with fuel economy because before those mods, I think the country trip was around 10l/100kms.

I went today for my first good long drive after doing the muffler and intake. Started on M4 at Blacktown (at the twin Caltexes where I filled up) and headed straight up the mountains all the way to Mt Victoria (near Lithgow) and came down near Colo, connecting with Richmond Road to get me back home.
Round trip (with some heavy rain) was just under 3 hours, using Auto all the way.
Display showed a highest reading of 9.6 and a lowest reading of 8.3 (was 8.4 when I got home). I think very good considering these are twisty up and down roads.
EDIT: Those Caltexes are nearest to Eastern Creek, not Blacktown.

I had a carby V8 VL Calais with rebuilt engine running Premium, and giving me about 18L/100KMs.

for the week of xmas/new years, we drove to sydney and back with some general running around (exactly 2000km's was when I read it all off).
On the way to Sydney I filled up in Somerton (basically the last suburb out of melbourne on freeway) Refilled in Golburn(sp.?)
A/C on with cruise set on 109-110km/h set via GPS (dash is around 5-8km/h out).
What I learned;
Its a LONG way, the freeway is FANTASTIC.
I achieved better econmy from BP ultimate than any other brand fuel I used.
On the way there fuel economy was 8.8lt/100km (dropped to 8.5 when a/c was turned off, just to see what would happen but it was too hot so it stayed on)
Average speed when we got to sydney was 101.(7 or 8)km/h
On the way back we were using Caltex Vortex and achieved 9.1lt/100km (Didnt turn a/c off, it was 44°C)
Total trip was 2000km average consumption was 9.9lt/100km
The computer fuel usage is out, when I filled at Golburn(sp.?) I had used 2 less litres than the car said. I always fill up until I can see the fuel, so it wasnt a filling error.
In summary;
2000km of combined highway/city driving = 9.9lt/100km

5-8K's out, eh? I noticed mine was about 4-5K's out. I tried getting the dealer to correct it but they said it was just within limits. My guess is that everyone's speedometer was calibrated for 18" rims.
Never relied on computer fuel usage either.
As for fuel economy, I always fill up when I'm almost running on empty and after having done over 6,000kms in 4 weeks using the bruce/pacific highway I found that my max range would be around 730kms, slightly more if I stop at BP. Just glad I didn't get bogged down on those flooded roads.
Oh yeah - I see NRMA's given the top large car to the Aurion while the 380's got 2nd place yet again.
