After my 1st TF has been running perfectly since I bought it, the transmission developed a fault, and now all of a sudden it's pouring out huge amounts of blue smoke whenever I have it on park and give it a bit of a rev, then when it idles after it continues to pour blue smoke. I'm starting to dislike Magna's!
I am assuming it is a valve stem seal problem? Can anyone recommend somewhere in Brisbane that does a good job and isn't too expensive? Any ideas around what it will probably cost me would help too

Head gasket usually triggers white smoke (coolant/water entering combustion chambers)
Piston rings leaking oil into combustion chambers is what I'm thinking...
Yep probably valves or rings.

C'mon it's far from a NEW car, they are not designed to last forever. This is why we have mechanics and such .....

I guess it's just me, but every magna i've had has turned out to be a piece of ****, even when it gets serviced everytime it's due.
What price range am I looking at for valve stem seals and rings to be replaced?

Heres a quote about the Magna from the Lemon Guide book that went on sale last week.
"A ten year old toyota is at middle age; a ten year old Mitsubishi is thinking about retirement"

You should be able to buy it from any good newsagent. Its the latest one made it has most cars listed in it ranged from 1998-2008. Its a bloody good book. Interesting read. Should be around $24.95.

Probably because you've owned magnas that are pre TH.
Dont do the rings. The v6s are common for valve stem seals when they get a bit old.

Think of it as a positive mate. This gives you the excuse to have the heads pulled and to port and polish them :)

I have to say my car is a TE and it has done 210K with no problems. so I dont think is fair to say a 10 year old car is about to die.
You service the car when it is due, may I ask when is so called due? every 15K? I do my oil change and such every 7k by myself, and the car is always smooth running.
Whether is a TE/TF/TH is how your previous owner look after the car and your luck in buying it. I can tell you straight up that my car can be sold to people easily just by looking at its condition of the engine bay and overall of the car's condition. Is shocking to see how others have maintain their car. I have went car hunting for a smaller car and it was shocking to see their car's condition compared to mine.

 it seems to me that the book is the lemon.
My 1994 TR turns 13 years old in a week's time and is still going strong after having done
180k km and after never having anything fixed other than the replacement of the alternator brushes, the battery and the tyres.
I don't know if I was lucky or what but this is the most reliable car I have ever owned.
btw I had it since new. :)
Cheers

My time of fixing cars is well and truely over .. I made the choice to buy ex demo with factory warranty. In saying that a transmission problem to me is fatal ... to a mechanic/knowledgable person its a half days work ... A hard drive failure for me is a quick cheap fix, for someone else it could be a $500 fix plus call out fee!
Make a choice .. fix or trade in

Mate dont worry, i agree, my magna is 9 years old, and i certainly wont be letting it die next year. That was just one comment from the book, not an overall rating. This is the overall rating for a 3rd Gen 96 - 2005
Quick Summary - The last gasp from a vehicle that once seemed destined for stardom.
How Reliable - Okay
How Safe - Dodgy, without air bags
OVERALL RATING - Its ok, if its done less than 150k.
Remember this book is not rating every magna, its giving you advice if your looking into buying a second hand vehicle.
