hey guys. I have an 89 Magna SE Elite. thinking about converting it to manual. Found a cheap donor car for $650 but not sure what it would cost to put in or if its worth it. Any suggestions?
thanks

If you're going to do all the work yourself (re; free) then yeah, do it.
If not, don't bother.

If your auto is currently going OK, then personally I don't think so unless you are able to do the work yourself. Have a look at the "Sticky" thread above: "Manual conversion in progress." I'd hate to be paying someone to do all that.

Gday robbieins2.
Id stay stick with what you have until it goes wrong... if its not broke dont fix it!!
Just by looking at your photo id say your car is an SE, someones just stuck an elite badge on it at some stage through its life... the majority of elites are two tone, have the alloys, and should have chrome strips around the window frames. Your aerial is on the roof too, elites are on the rear quarter. Not that it matters if your fiddling around with it anyway!!
I reckon that light blue is one of my favourite colours in Magnas... i just bought myself one to add to my group the other day in that colour.
Anyway look forward to hearing more about what you decide to do with it... and some photos with the 17's !!
Alex.
That's only a SE. If your auto box is dead, or dying, the manual conversion is worth it. If your box is still good, it's not worth the hassle.

Don't go converting it unless there's something wrong with it, or if you really want to like me, make sure you have another car to drive while it's off the road etc.
In terms of performance, you would be surprised how quicker it would be. I've been in Mad Lante's car and it's the quickest N/A 1st gen going around.
0-100 was about 7 seconds or less, front wheel spin going into 2nd and 3rd gears. And that was with a stock magna 1st gen gearbox, there are a few better gearboxes out there that can fit up so then you'll be able to really push the engine. I had endless amounts of respect to Mad Lante after I had been in His car, then there are people out there that bag 1st gens and how poor they are, and how magna's in general are a waste of money.
True maybe they are a waste of money, but its much more rewarding to me seeing a done up magna than another done up commodore or falcon drive past, mainly because there's less done up magna's. There are a few examples of good 1st gens out there, just gotta look harder.
In the end, depends on how you feel about the car, it wont ever be worth the bother, just depends on how much you love the car. Mkayy, hopefully after that speech you know what you wonna do. :P

yup I agree totaly im sticking to my magna and it would be wicked to have the wheels spin in 3rd gear. I hope i can do this when im finished. anyways, thanks mate
yer its an Elite I CBF measuring the rims.
hey buddy you don't need to measure rims just check out the tires it will have three numbers.. separated by forward slashes.. i.e 205/55/R16
205 is the width of the tire in millimetres, (sidewall to sidewall)
55 is height of the sidewall, expressed as a percentage of the width (aspect ratio)
and 16 is your rim size..
i have no idea why they mix metric and imperial measurements..
