hi guys, a recent mechanic trip left the car not quite right, beign very sluggish under 3000rpm and i wasnt happy with how the car was idling, so i returned the car to the mechanics, to which they discovered the mechanic who did the work removed the little switching motor on the side of the inlet runners (i assume that has a secondary set of butterflys) to get to the distributor.

Now they cant seem to work out how to 'fix' or reset this device?

ANyone have experience on it? if there is manual on it like those greggory's ones id give it a go myself (no **** my dog ate my greggory's manual) the car is very out of sorts, the mechanics are saying the motor is faulted (and at my expense) will replace the whole manifold (seeing as how they dont know how to set one up)

Kind regards

Lionel

tried searching but i dont even know what the device is called, and coudnt find anything

they removed something on your car they re-fitted it incorrectly and it's your problem?

I'd be heading back down there with a spare set of keys. make them fix it and drive the car away when they aren't looking. wait for them to tell you your car has been stolen and then call them back a few days later saying the cops found it.

what if the mechanics are the ones that report it stolen, the cops will find out you tricked them and you will get done for fraud. Thats a jailable offense.

well if the mechaics report it stolen then tell the cops you didn't know you had to pay for it seeing as they were the ones that broke it, you forgot that you gave them the spare key and you were just picking up your car after it was fixed. If the mechanics report it stolen then they will get put up on the fraud charges.

I can't visualise it at the moment 'cause I don't have my car or photos with me... first guess was Idle Speed Controller, but that's on the opposite end of the engine than the distributor?

The ISC varies your idle settings to suit whatever loads are currently applied. Note that if the battery has been disconnected, it can run ragged and unresponsive for a while until the ECU retrains itself with the appropriate seetings, eg. how much petrol to kick in when you stomp on the accelerator.

ill set the scene (by the way guys im not into dubious behaviour, when i was younger maybe, and drank more but not these days)

on the timing belt side of the engine, in a 2nd which is the passenger side strut tower side, ust aboe the dissy there is a little controller or some sort (i dont knwo what it does) that i assume opens and shuts a secondary set of butterflys that are position on the inlet runners (half way between the plenum and the actually intake ports of the head)

i have had this off before on another car, and there is a wheel which has a 90degree amount of movement (so open/close just like a throttle plate) and inside the motor/controller thing is a shalf with a thread on it that rotates when given the signal to regulate this butterfly arrangment.

dont really know how to explain it more, i have no idea of its prupose and why this have gone to ****.

ive tried resetting it myself through trial and error but its comming up nothing

any more ideas fellas? thanks so far

(they are only going to charge me for the controller/motor cheap and use a 2nd hand plenun, im not happy and have said to wait until i get back to them)

So what happened? Is it fixed, how much they charge...?

I know what ur talking about and you have explained it well enough.
But i'm sorry i dont know how to fix. so call this a bump or just a threadmine..

(was searching for aftermarket manifolds for 2ndgenv6:D )

Isn't there a link to the service manual on AMC somewhere??

There is definiately a motor that opens the butterflies at higher rpm. They may have removed it and the butterflies are in the OPEN position at low rpm, the gears are in the wrong spot, the motor couldn't close it and burnt out? The runners are now shorter and the air speed thru such short runners under low load has a low air speed and the air/fuel ratios and fuel/air mixing are going to sh17. If they touched it - they need to fix it. Dept of Fair Trading

Pay by credit card, leave the store, phone your credit card company and halt the payment. Popular in the US with disputed work and suspected overcharging. Keep us all up to date - the name of the workshop would help other members too!

I didnt even know the VICS servo was adjustable....

Just grab another one from the wreckers and try fitting it.

I Assumed that it was simply on/off at a particular RPM. it's for the runner lengths, and that only affects air speed.
Not throttle controled as not load dependant
Low RPM would want long runners/ Short runners for high Rpm

umm, correct me if im wrong guys but you shouldn't have to pay for it if the mechanic stuffed it up.

Thats how i figure it out too... If it didn't go in needing fixing, then it's thr responsibility

hey guys, thanks for all the replies, ive been without a pc for a couple days or so

the workshop fixed it, and was mostly a misunderstanding as to why they said i had to pay for the motor. In the end the motor was fine, its just the screw/winding pin inside it had wrecked the gear teeth on the plastic cog it covers, enough to stop it from working but not enough to look worn/broken

had the the car all checked out by a mitsubishi dealer before my trip up north to rocky and she ran better then ever, even with a thermostat that goes cold when on the highway with the missus driving we averaged 10.5km/L (9.5L/100KM) which sounds alright to me...far better then before.

thanks for the persistance

Lionel

Even if the scenario ended worse i still wouldnt publicly name the workshop, ill just say it is a popular ipswich workshop, qld
