Does anyone have any feedback, both positive and negative, about a 2005 VRX. I heard the tiptronic boxes are unreliable. What problems will I encounter with this vehicle? Is it worth fitting a K and N panel filter or is that a waste of money (will I feel any difference)?
I live in New Zealand, our VRX's are 173 kw compared to your 163 kw in OZ.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.:D

5 speed tippys are fine provided they have been well serviced and maintained.

K&N panels are good because they never have to be replaced.
If you are installing one for performance then you wont feel any difference.

Still some good ralliarts availiable over here, saw a manual advertised somewhere too. As for K & N I bought one from RPW in Perth and had it shipped over, still under half the price quoted here in Wellington. Didnt notice a performance difference but still glad I did it for the quality.

dude if you're in NZ i would be buying a legnum or a galant, dime a dozen and most 2nd hand yards have them (they did when i was in wellington a few years back)
the 5 speed tiptronic is quite strong.
Dunkerton ran a stock 5sp tippy in his awd rally magna no problems.

Interesting, anyone know why this is? I believe the NZ magnas had a different intake snorkel, but surely that aint worth 10kw alone.
If I lived in NZ I would take advantage of the hella cheap import fees and get yourself a jap powerhouse. Are radar detectors still legal over there? Another reason why you should get a fast car :)

I'm pretty sure the tune was different, and intake.

As far as I know it's just the snorkel change on the australian and nz TL's

I drove a 2005 AWD VRX from Orange to Thredbo and back and the thing was great. Not exactly frugal but then again I wasn't exactly easy on it :D
It had good power in the 163kw guise - another 10kw would make a great daily driver.
They're well featured too, with climate control, a good stereo, and power options. Ride comfort was good in my opinion and there were no issues with the auto box. Then again, if you're not after the AWD version you could try a manual.

Does that mean if we retune a Aus one to 95 ron then run it on premium all the time it'd show such a power gain?

Nah they have 91RON. In NZ for a holiday atm and they have 91.
The whole Magna (Diamante) range in NZ has more power, it must be in the tune. The CAI was only an option, I think it may have become standard on the very last of the VR-X's. There are plenty of VR-X's on Trade-me.co.nz which do not have the CAI. Yeah 91 is the standard fuel over there, maybe the lack of extreme high temperatures allowed them to tune a bit more aggressively? In the old days NZ cars had more power because they didn't have the Emission control gear, but I don't think that's the case any more.
With the huge range of cars available over there for really cheap prices, including stuff from europe that we didn't get over here, I would pick something else, but then again, what may be a novelty to us may not be a novelty to a NZer.

The vr-x's had 163kw 317nm up untill the tw range which is the same as ours, then the tw had 172kw 325nm. and the only thing that changed was the intake snorkel.
I can upload the diamante brochures if anyone's keen

That's certainly a useful increase, the whole TW range must have received the new intake as the ES had 164kw/324nm, and the LS AWD had 163kw/317nm (same as our VR-X?). If it's just the intake then that should settle the CAI vs stock snorkel debate.

intake does nothing!
has anyone thought that the different power levels are due to different regulations and methods of power rating
eg the iso din or ece tests?
they can easily have a great variance on the rated power of an engine.... hell if we rated it in BHP you'd see (once converted to kw) atleast a 5-10kw gain
