I own a 2002 Series 2 TJ VR-X and my battery light on the dash has started to randomly flicker...

What would this be due to? Alternator? Earthing?

Regards
Alex

i've had this on my TP magna and my old KR Verada ... nothing on the 380 ... yet
I'd also be interested in knowing what it is. I ran big systems on both cars .. amps subs etc

My Ralliart started doing this ages ago... seems to go on more when you put your foot down.
mine mainly comes on after about 4000RPM..

haven't had any trouble with it. probably something just in the light connection. i cbf trying to fix it atm... its kind of like a light to remind me not to drive hard. lol

Usually means there is a problem with your charging system. If it's flickering it means to voltage is dropping too low OR it's too high. Either suggests the alternator (most likely worn brushes) is on its way out, if it's worn brushes will only cost you about $30 for a kit to replace them.

It may be too early for worn brushes. You can check brushes by removing regulator and brush assembly from alternator.
Brush length when new is 12 mm, minimum length is 3.8 mm.
Check electrolyte level in the battery. If low fill with distilled water. Level should be about 15 mm above plates, use some cardboard strips to check level. If you need to replenish electrolyte often that suggest overcharging.
Alternator maximum output is 110 amps, voltage 14.25-14.55 volts.
There might be short to earth in the warning lamp circuit. Also check B+ and S lead from alternator.
Alternator, voltage regulator or battery might be faulty.
