hey guys, just a quick question, do you think a very small 80w amp will have enough power to push a 400w sub? i dont want anything crazy just a little more bass and i can get this setup off my brother for free as long as i buy the wiring kit, dont wanna buy the kit and not have it work...
cheers.

it wouldnt be worth it in my opinion if the sub is 400wrms, if it was 400max then maybe

Do you have details on the sub or amp? saying it's a 400w sub and 80w amp doesn't say alot it could work out "ok" or it might be rubbish.

Edit:
i.e. is the amp mono? or 2ch, 4ch? is it 80W RMS or 80W max? and is that 80W RMS at 4ohms? etc. etc.
If it's a 2ch amp w/ 80W RMS p/ch @ $ ohms, you could bridge it for your sub and get enough power to give yourself a bit of extra sub bass..
I guess because you havea wagon, you don't have the thik seats etc. for the sub bass to try and plow through, so it might be enough for your needs.

Depends.. a semi-decent wiring kit wont set you back too much, and if your ever going to have a system in the future your going to need to do it anyway. Its up to you, your bank, and effort.

i know the sub is 400w max, not rms, and the amp is probably 80w max too, dont have the amp with me, i dont expect it to be a great setup i just want a little more bass over stock and im pretty broke.

lol i probably shoulda done some more research before posting this, i know the amp is 2 channels at 40w a channel so even if its bridged thats still only 80w max at 2 ohms.

I've wow'd people with an alpine amp around 30w rms and a precision audio 12inch sub around 40-60w rms .. Do it .. it will sound fine.

EDIT: Especially in a wagon :)

Ehhhhhhh depends like these boys have said, if your sub only comes alive after say 100w and your amp only pushes 80w MAX then your gonna get a crappy sounding deflated sub. Do a bit more research into your kit and then let us know.

plus if it's 2 chan @ 4ohms it'll be Bridged @ 2 and if your sub is 4 ohms then you'll be right to get some more chuff then running it at 4 because there'll be more power to push it. Just hope it's not a DVC 2ohm sub, then you'll be better running some PC speakers or something :P

Dude if you have a 2ch amp that only produces 40W x2, chances are that it will be around 120W x1 @ 4ohm. Most amps will not bridge to a lowly 2ohm ( *cough Boston* ).

Be careful on the volume, with not much power you will find that you will most likely fry your coil in persuit of noise. More efficient enclosures are the only way to get around that, or of course buying a more powerful amp.

hi again, thanks for all your input but ive decided to go an easier way and look at buying an active subwoofer, ive found this JVC one:

has anybody had any experience with these types of subs? would the 120w power be decent enough for a wagon?

You would be limited in upgrades. Its an easy way of doing it but you'd want to hear it first before buying. Is that a 5 inch woofer???

id be using the $500 profit from your cressida and put it towards a decent sub and amp, youd prob get a half decent sub and a nice jaycar amp to power it for that price

A 2 x 40 watt amp will put out ~160 w x 1 when bridged usually as the amp will see a 2 ohm load across each channel.

May as well, but dont expect miracles. Your doing it on the cheap so it will sound cheap.

I would invest in a decent wiring kit so you dont have to redo it when you want to upgrade.
