Ok guys... Just wondering what the value of adjustable cam gears on a SOHC motor would be..?

The way I see it is that on a DOHC motor you can adjust the cam overlap by advancing/retarding the exhaust and/or inlet cams respectivly to adjust your powerband [not too many gains to be had though]

So what is the value of them on the SOHC motor? Wank factor?

Vital for a 6G74 engine as some cam manufacturers appear to cheat and sell a cam that has the timing dowel 6° out to suit the 6G72 engine.

However it often helps to then dial the cam in properly, often you can get a significant power gain by adjusting the cam timing. This means that, of course, you can afford the multiple dyno runs to check the results after each adjustment.

yes definitely a requirement for gains. if you advance them you can increase torque in the lower midrange, and retard them for top end power gain. it is basically what ralliart did for the ralliart magnas...retarded 'bout 6 degrees.

Interesting to know how many degrees each tooth on the cam gear for the 6G74 is. Might *borrow* the cams out of a 380 rental while I've got the timing belt off........

Looking at my adjustables here (for the DOHC dur)
from the middle of the raised part of the tooth to the middle of the next raised part is approx 8 degrees.

on a SOHC though, since its the one cam, if your advancing the cam, wont it be good for say inlet, and sort of muck the exhaust bit up?

Its really give and take with a SOHC,
