good afternoon all

was using my car for bfs work (as his VT commo is now in its death throws)
i dont let him drive it, i drive the car with him (and plus, gets me out of the house too for the day)
anyhow

was coming up to an intersection, with a left turn at any time with care sliplane, it was an uphill drive, of reasonable steepness, and i was doing less than 10km/ph

so im cruising up to the turn - well more freerolling in Drive, i get my space to turn into so i put my foot down to take it..
the reaction was like a wet sponge from the tranny - shudder shudder do i really have to move?
so i flick it across into tippy, and look at the indicator - the light was next to the 3!!!
i flicked the tippy down to first and booted it away around the corner, put it back into D and she was sweet from there on.

just finding it a little worrying that i was freerolling (in D, but no foot on accelerator) UPHILL, and it insisted on holding 3rd gear even when i put my foot down.

the car is 2500km overdue for its 60,000km service, but it has had EVERY service so far, evven the inbetween not so important ones. (benefits of buying a Mitsubishi accountants car i guess)

should i worry about this - or is it more just an odd glitch that took place?

thoughts?
cheers!

Odd glitch i think... my 4speeder does it with 50thousand on it.

A particular carpark entrance/exit gets me all the time.

It's just one of those quirks. Mine does odd stuff every now and then; it always chooses the wrong gear for the hill leading up to work.

Unfortunately the TL/KL 5-speed autos hang on to 3rd gear until you almost hit a standstill, at which point it will go back to 1st. (Yes it bypasses 2nd completely).

just because it has had every service, doesn't mean the auto gets any treatment each time it goes in. the magna autos a a very fussy beast indeed, to the point where you need to change the oil more regularly than what's indicated in the handbook. I have had two flushes of the auto in the last 50000kms, and it ironed out a few probs i was having with it. i will change it every 2nd service now

i was thinking / hoping that because it was a mitsu car - that they intended to sell, it would have had very good treatement, and been thoroughly looked after.

happy that it was a minor glitch - i didnt realise that the auto held third until the very last second then droped back to first.
This must have been the first time that i have caught it out.

cheers :)

if it was a dealer car they might have sat back and stamped the book while they had 5 o'clock beers. and the accountant would've been pleased that they saved money by not doing the service.

Check your tranny fluid, some have said theirs looked bad early in life, mine looks ok at 40k, just checked as it will be changed tomorrow.
excuse my cynical attitude to dealerships, but I bet I'll be the same tomorrow night after I get the car back from a service.

the car was ment to be going in for a service tomorrow... but due to needing it for bf's work coz his work VT commo has **** itself and isnt going anywhere under its own power!

so service has to be put off...
and then drive the car 1200km north

around mackay

then back 1200 km to the gold coast..

maybe then it might get serviced - im not looking foreward to pushing the car this far past a service - itl be nearly 6oookm overdue..

i think by me putting it into tippy and booting it, stopped it being able to change down like it should - so i caught it out, otherwise it would have changed back when i started moving again.

did you put your foot down, or smash it into the floor so it really got the message?
mine will sometimes drop gears if I just give it a quick stab on te throttle rather than hold it flat.
awd anyway, just drive round all corners at 200km/h in 5th

i dont put my foot flat to the boards when taking a gap in traffic, il hold it down around the 3/4s throttle - car feels more responsive, and doesnt drop down too many gears and waste time in needless upshifting.

but in saying that, the car has learnt tht the only time i put it flat to the boards, is when i really want the motor to work hard and get moving.
i get the same response really from 3/4 throttle.

just as a side note, when in tippy, the tranny will downshift to 2nd by itself, it will also set off in 2nd when in tippy.
That is for slippery conditions when you dont want all that torque going to the ground.

Bit of useless info for yas!

i found when i leave it in tippy in 3rd or something, and plant my foot, it wont drop down a gear to give me the full effect of WOT.
i tried that when i first got the car, and it held 3rd - only changes down when in D - at least in my car anyhow.

i am currently in the middle of nowhere, doing the 1137km trip back to mackay - fuel average in 10L/100km Neat, better than what i was getting on the way to the gold coast when i moved there - oh very exciting, its just dropped to 9.9L / 100km average!
how exciting.
