G'Day Guys,
My new TE Atlera is going to be coping some sevre punishment at times now that I actually have some power to play with :D. I know a major killer for auto transmissions is heat and am about to fit a transmission cooler.
What I wanted to know is there anything wrong with going for the biggest i can get my hands on. I've seen a massive core for a big V8 and this looks effective. But is there a problem with cooling the oil too much?
Secondly does anyone know of the best places in which to get one, cheaply :D?

I do work for a company that imports these mate. I see them lying around whenever im there (today actually). They have pallets of them. They only do Auto Transmission Parts so these guys REALLY no there shit (they supply all your big retail shops).
Neway, to get to the point i'll get one for you cheaper than anywhere. What car is it for exactly?
(ie year, 4 or 6)

This is actually something that I would would be interested in as well cause you can never take too much care of your auto :)
Something I found after some research is that bigger isn't always better either.

Yeah thats what i've been reading. From what i've read if you go to big you can cool the oil to a point where its less effecient in lubricating moving parts. Can anyone back this up?
gremlin id be interested in what you guys have, any chance on a photo of what they look like or a brand? Fitting it to a V6.

Blake, are you going to turbo your 3.0L? you'll have to if you want more response from the AUTO.
damn i really want to go back to a manual....
I blame my friend, let me drive his manual Integra Type R

hahaha a turbo would be nice but not very practicle for me...
I must admit i was manual all the way but these days im just lazy... Besides if I have a manual I HAVE to thrash it, I can't just drive it normally...

There are several brands you can use but in a nutshell you don't need a large one to drop the tempatures by a large amount.
Ideally you want to drop the tempatures down around 10 - 20 degrees max over the factory settings as any more than that and you can cause upshifting probelms etc.
The prices for a aftermarket kit varies from the top of the range around $130.00 for the oil cooler only with brackets and goes down from there.
Fitment is usually around 2 hours with high pressure / high tempature / oil resistant hosing (Don't go cheap here) which has to be routed but is not usually a problem.
On the magna's I need to check if they run hosing or if it is just the oil fitler as it may require a similiar kit like an engine oil cooler adaper fitting which would jump the price up and requrie the use of AN fittings instead of barbed hose fittings.

Would this be pretty easy to install yourself Mitsiman? Simple kind of.. Bracket here.. hoses there.. top up the fluid.. start engine.. top up fluid to suit?
Do you think it's worthwhile? I don't tow anything but I do like to flog my car once in a while... however often that is.. hehe.
Sorry to go OT but anyway.. my dad drives an AU and just before it went out of warranty he was having a bit of trouble... intermitently with the gearbox and stalling, etc. Seemed to be fixed and then out of warranty it played up again so he took it back. The Ford dealer thought he'd done the head gasket on it and actually took the head off before they realised they were wrong. The radiator was cracked and ATF was leaking into the radiator.. meaning oil in the radiator fluid and giving the impression of a blown head gasket. Whoops! :)

I was speaking to some guys from a performance workshop a while back at a car show and they said the coolers are dead easy to install yourself.
I've ordered mine so should be interesting to see when its all hooked up :D Will keep you guys informed and post some pics next week :D

Yeah if you have an auto you need one of these, even more so if you drive hard or tow stuff.
You can pick em up from Autobarn stores, from $60 to $150 depending on the size motor you have, there are different types for 4cyl and 6cyl and 8cyl cars.
As burning out your forward clutches on an auto is not a fun thing to have happen, very costly.

Well i've noticed, especially on my last magna (2.4 TE) that if i was holding gears (driving the auto like a man) that the gearbox would overheat to sometimes the point where the tranny oil would shoot out the dipstick.
Since my Altera is going to cop some punishment here and there I think its a worthwile buy to ensure that the Auto has the best chance of survival

It just so happens I went to my local mitsubishi dealer's service department yesterday, and asked the service guy on the desk about a transmission cooler.
I told him I was planning on extractors, chipping, etc, but he reckoned I wouldn't need one on my TJ. Just said to keep it serviced every 15k/km. He said I'd probably only need one if I was towing, or unless the auto box was modded, like a stage2 shift kit was installed.
I thought this was a bit of a strange response. But interesting never the less. ??? I'll definiately be looking for more opinnons on this!

wouldn't it be just replacing the standard cooler? i mean take out the standard cooler and replace with aftermarket product? prolly new bracket as well? 2nd gen does have transmission cooler, 3rd gen? or what about putting fan on factory cooler? he..he.. if it works?...

Yeah the idea is to run the tranny cooler of the factory cooler, so you have two... The stock cooler just runs of regular high pressure oil lines and nothing super special so i can't see the need for special braided lines etc. It would jsut be a matter of hooking up the oil cooler and making mounting brackets.
In theory anyway...
