View Full Version : Brakes on TJ

I believe the brakes on my old TS Advance were better than on the TJ Advance I now own.
For starters the TS fronts had twin pistons. Both cars BTW have ABS. looking at the brake pad part numbers, the TJ uses the same pads (so came calipers) as the low spec (non ABS) TR 2.6 litre. WTF????
Any comments welcome. Also I am about to replace the rear pads. Fitted Bendix General CT to the fronts lasst week. Now thinking of getting Lucas for the rear. Anyone used Lucas and if so what grade and price?

TS did not come with twin pistons, either somebody has changed the brakes before you got the car or you had a KS and even then I think they were only on the Xi(?).......
But yes, 3rd Gen single piston brakes are average......

No if it had ABS it would of been twin piston. Pretty sure if ti had ABS that is what you got.
Also to get Twin pistons (im pretty sure but correct me if im wrong) were Elite models too even in 4cyl.
And yeah the disc's will be same into some 3rd gen models too. Not to sure if its TJ but i know F+R Rotors from a KH fit on my TR.

I assume and hope the performance TJ Magnas have better brakes than the Advance/Executive with ABS. If Sports, VRX etc dont' have better brakes that would be a shame. At the end of the day mItsubishi has the technology/products, but is always cutting cost to give people the gimmicks they see and want and leaving out the really good stuff. Would prefer good brakes rather than the trip computer.

Dude its done everywhere.
Look at holden.
he buick came out in the VN in 88.
The VS had the ecotec in 95 which was a revision of the buick
and the ecotec was used up until the VY?
so if you feel bad imagine buying a brand new car which basically has a VN engine in it.
cost cutting ftw

The only 3rd gens with the bigger brakes were the AWD and the Ralliart. They came with slightly bigger rear brakes and bigger fronts with twin pot calipers.

I have the Ralliart brakes on mine, they are heaps better than the missus KF!

The TS V6 with ABS had twin piston on the front, also had vented disc on the rear which the gen 3 miss out on

running a Lucas/RDA combo here, brakes nicely (havent used the higher end packages to compare), can be dusty tho...
also read thru the forums, some combinations of pads/rotors can be just crap, and you'll chew through pads in no time!
Lucas + RDA slotted = no more than $250 for the fronts :)

Ralliarts and AWDs had vented rear rotors

i noticed with the single pistons that they were very average, however i recently upgraded my fronts to 380 twin pistons with dba 4000's and bendix ultimate pads (group buy megatron did) including fitment was under 1200 dollars and it pulls up so much better and is a lot nicer on the eye lol

Yep. While the standard non ABS TS wagons and sedans got 258mmx10.4mm solid rears, the ABS sedan got 266mmx18mm vented rotors, while the wagon got 284mmx20mm vented rears.
magna00: They're great hey :D Mine have started squealing a bit, but she sure stops quick.

Was there any REAL WORLD difference in the vented's? Rotors will need to be changed so would going from solid to vented make any real difference?

You'd be able to work the brakes harder and for much longer, due to the increased thickness and the venting. I've only ever seen one 2nd Gen with vented rears; a wrecked KS sedan. Even though I own a TL, I thought long and hard about getting them...

I will have to check this out at the wreckers next time as i thought they were all solid.
Great more things for me to spend money on. sigh

If they're still there next time I go out, I'll get them, even if it's for investigative purposes lol

Would the calipers off TS fitted with ABS bolt straight onto TJ? Because then the best easiest cheapest upgrade would be get calipers off TS wagon (big, thick vented rear calipers), overhaul all the calipers, buy new rotors and new pads and hey presto.

I wonder if there the same as Ralliart & AWD

No, they're different. The TS ABS wagon rotors are 65.5mm high, while the AWD and Ralliart's rear are 60.2mm high. Other than that, they're exactly the same.

It seems the TJ Magna Sports has only single piston calipers in the front (same as Executive). Can anyone confirm this???? There are 3 different calipers (sumitomo, brembo and another??) in the TH series, so the Sports and maybe Verada (Kh) had bigger/better/ twin piston brakes???

Ralliart and AWD have twin piston calipers and bigger rotors in the 3rd gen series, that's it.

i can support this comment, my TH sports has standard little baby brakes :doubt:
Screamin TE

both my TE exec and my TJ sports have the same brakes. Except the TE has been upgraded to slotted rotors and bendix ultimate at the front. Stops really nice, however, the TJ has a much nicer feel at the pedal than the TE. Does anyone know if they upgraded the boosters throughout the model range.

so just summing up..
anyone with a gen 3 (non awd or ralliart) that wants a brake upgrade, can use TS V6 ABS front calipers, possibly even the 2.6 elite with ABS has them also.. these will bolt in place of the stock gen 3 calipers, use the same rotor and pads from the gen 3..
correct? :) just making sure.. before i go to the wreckers and pick apart one of the many hundred of magna's there..

while i dont know i wouldnt be so sure 2nd gen gear would bolt up, think that was just used as a reference, for 3rd gens as far as i know the only bigger brakes are ralliart/AWD and aftermarket

i guess i'll take a trip down to the wreckers and trial fit some onto a 3rd gen down there then..
FYI - i called around.. it varies.. but most places want about $20 each side for a '95 v6 magna caliper' so i'll grab a pair of them.. a new seals for both of them.. rebuild them and chuck them in with new pads (providing they do indeed bolt on)

If you are asking if these will fit the later TJ, it has been answered already, no.
The caliper itself is the same but the bracket is different.
