Trying to take this thing off but am afraid of breaking it. Can i stick a screw driver on it and bash it with a hammer ? and is oil going to piss out ?

I'm assuming your talking about the little cover plate on the timing cover.

It has 2 10mm bolts holding it in then it should just come off. If its stuck it is probably held with silastic or something.

Just push (or tap) it sideways and it should slide off and break the silastic bond.

If the engine is off, nothing will come out.

To adjust the chain, loosen the 10 mm bolt inside about 1/2 a turn, press the little pin down with your finger and tighten the nut while holding it.

If you use a screwdriver to press it down dont put too much force on it, it only moves a little.:D

OK thanks for that

I decided to do it because when i had my rocker cover off, the chain was extremely loose so i hope tightening it will shut the chattering up for a little while lol.

Thanks again :D

Is there something missing in there?

Ol' Fart

1 of 2 things has happened.

1: your adjuster has come off OMFG (unlikely)

2: you have a silent shaft eliminator kit in there (probable)

the only way to know 4 sure is to take the timg cover off and look

Usually if the bolt comes out the adjuster stays there as it is held by the bottom bolt.
You would be able to see it, even in those pics.

Id say you have the kit in there which means the rattle is your timing chain.
Does it start loud when you start the engine then get a bit quieter??

It may be the chain is stretched
It may be the adjuster rachet is sticking (so is pookys  )
It may be the oil needs changing (how old is it)

Nah it doesn't get quieter it just stays loud all the time but seems to quieten at 2.5K rpm and then loud again under that.

I changed the oil about 3 weeks ago. This sucks

Looks like im gonna have to take the cover off :(

best o luck :D

probly put a new chain in

To begin with, we should point out that this will not make any difference to the timing chain, it is the balance chain guide which can not be seen with the rocker cover off.

If the bolt is missing oyu are in trouble as the guide is still there thus you do nto have an eliminator kit.

This is common because lazy a55 mechanics do not bother to tension the bolts properly and they either over tighten and stretch the bolt or under tighten and they come out.

It is a given it is floating around in your sump, and if your timing chain is loose so are the other bolts that are supposed to hold on your other guides.

If you have a look in the second gen section, there was a rebuild I did about a year ago where this had happened, the chain had eaten the remaining guide, the metal had blocked the oil filter and the rest is history, as was the motor

cant see the guide there at all.

We did touch on guides coming off.

I guess hell know when the cover comes off :)

until you find out if the motor has a balance chain elimination kit

safest thing to do is remove the sump---- have a look for the bolt
if you find the bolt
plan for a timing chain replacement kit
that bolt doesnt come in the timing chain kit that I can recall
its a stepped bolt

your picture shows no guide..it may have moved upwards
because the rotation is clockwise
and special bolt A is loctited

Hmmm....

I would like to buy the timing chain kit and install it my self but im not sure if i will be able to do it and i dont want to take it to a mechanic because they will charge me a fortune and probably do a dodge :headbange

Does the engine have to come out or moved ? My mate said i can use his car hoist would that help ?

I have 0 funds atm so when i can buy some oil ill take the sump off and look for the bolt.

I doubt i have the balance chain elimination kit because most people that make threads about them being removed say that the engine vibrates alot.

Besides the rattles on this engine it feels pretty damn smooth. No mirror shakes, no resonating nothing.

Time will tell i suppose.

was able to leave on
alternator, starter motor
front engine mount bracket
interim and passenger side cv drive shaft
gearbox and all electrical connections
method
car on car stands (saftey first )
minimum height from floor at tyre jack point on chassis 40 cm
support engine/gearbox with good floor jack

undo drive plate bolts to torque converter
undo automatic shift and all electrical connections ,speedo
look out for one bracket on chassis below the brake master cyl undo it
undo starter motor and alternator wires
oil sender wire

tie up inlet manifold and air con compressor to stop getting in the way

undo auto oil cooler hoses off of radiator to auto box
undo engine mount bolts 4x14 mm on passenger side into timing cover support
undo 4x14 driverside in through mudguard

lower onto a trolly or the jack to the floor and drag unit out from under car

You do not need to remove the motor but is a hell of a lot easier that is for sure

In respect to motor removal, you can lift it up with box on, which is my preferred way, it takes a bit of a tilt on the motor but will come out easy enough.

with a BSEK fitted, that adjustment bolt no longer exists. hopefully its jsut that and nothing else.
