View Full Version : Idle issues on hot restart

Hi all,
Have a Magna TP efi auto.
Have had an issue with the car on hot re-starts recently. I had a similar issues last summer but during winter didn't seem to have any problems, but has re-emerged now that it is warming up again.
The idle seems to fluctuate up and down on restart. It will sort of come good and then suddenly will dip in revs and will stall. I can press down on the accelerator and manage around the issue this way, but becomes annoying on stopping at lights and intersections.
On a cold start, I could drive around for hours with no issues. I go the shops for 5 minutes and return and there's an idle problem. Don't know what's going on here, any ideas?

When was it last at the mechanics?
Sounds like the timing is set to low, if the first gen has a screw try upping it abit, not too high as it will increase fuel consumption. Otherwise could be a faulty ISC.

check the temp sender on the inlet manifold
one under neath near the dissy
check
the stepper motor (ISC.)on the throttle body retracts as you turn on the ignition
the TPS at the throttle body
the air flow meter in the air filter
you may need a cold air intake mod
and then if the idle still is not stable at 850 approx try a s/hand ecu from a wrecker
there is a diagnostic if you want to run it

Hey there,
The auto fluid is fine. Due to my limiting knowledge on the car mechanics, if possible, could you explain the link between the auto trans oil and the current issues the car is experiencing?
Otherwise thanks for the input guys, I let you know how I am going. Cheers!!

it could be due to a dripping fuel injector i have this same problem with my tp wagon, i just brought a set of injectors from a TR for $50 hopefully it should fix the problem

check to make sure there are no air intake leaks

not sure if this is the same (exactly) as the prob that I had, but the cause may be the same.
Oil may be stuffing up the MAF sensors output signal.
check the tube between the air filter cannister and the throttle body, and the MAF sensor assembly in the air filter cannister, for oil build up. If there is oil traces, remove oil residue,
see if the car runs better.
for my TP, (and what it seemed to me, not being a mechanic), was that the breather hose (from the above described tube), to the rocker cover was allowing oil vapour to return to the tube, cool and pool and coat the tube and the MAF sensor assembly. (deduced by having the MAF sensor replaced by a known good MAF sensor and cleaning the tube of oil, the car ran good for a while, then the problem with stalling, idle, reappeared and so had the oil build up in the tube and over the MAF sensor).
I cleaned all oil traces from the tube and MAF sensor, then put an air filter in the hose connected between the tube and the rocker cover, and another filter in the hose connected to the PCV valve and the plenum chamber of the intake manifold. The car ran well after that. Some people have used the plastic body type fuel filter instead of the air filters that I used. (my fix was a variation of the Catch Can mod that people have done to reduce the oil vapour going into the fuel mixture via the PCV valve hose).
You can try the above, its cheap, quick to plumb the fuel filters, make sure all oil traces removed from the MAF sensor and tube that connects the air filter cannister to the throttle body, and hope that your MAF sensor is good and was only being stuffed about by oil residue.
If you do try this as a fix, let me know how it went.
cheers
