Long story short mech ****ed up my timing out a notch which is why it was running like a pig.
anyway, when he does my cam seals (been twice now so ill say seals:P) he takes off the gear and slides it on without releasing the tensioner.
so i took the cam gear off moved the gear a notch now just to get it back on.
how the hell do you do it?
Seems to grab a little bit and thats it...
(TR V6 Front head)
and i really CBF releasing the tensioner cause i still have to jam the crank pulley which means i could move the crank and rear cam a bit with the front head just loose..
so could cause some dramas i dont wanna get into.

I have 2 questions, what is your mechanic doing to cause so many cam seals to give out?
Why is he not removing the tensioner? Althought it can be done this way on a second gen, it is not advisable. It is so easy for the cam to move a little as the cam is still holding some valves open.
I can see no reason why you can not get it back on other than the cam is not lining up with the sprocket. You may need to turn the cam a fraction to get it all in. The tensioner will not move provided it has been properly set in the first place and the belt was not done up too tight when last installed properly

In repsonse
1) No idea. Absolutly no idea. all i know is the first time it popped out when i put it from D to R (idle was slightly high at the time) and this time as after the car got a floggin'
2)I dont know why but he's always told me just to get the front cam ready, and he just does it that way.
3) Well thats the thing, i tried to move the cam so i put the gear back on and then moved it over but then the problem was jamming it again to get the bolt out.
I'll have a look again tomorrow night and see how i go. Thought there might of been a trick here to doing it. the gear sort of got on but just never fully went in. I'll try some more yelling and screaming and see how that goes.
Guess the good thing out of this is i got my dashclock working :shifty: :D

It sounds like you do it the hard way.
Do it yourself...
Loosen the tensioner pully and slide timing belt off the cam gear.
Put a Oil filter removal tool around the gear and turn it so you align the right tooth.
Now some camshafts might want to move a tooth by just a little knock so be careful and keep an eye on the gear as you put the belt back on and make sure the slack in the belt is taken up on the tensioner side so you dont move the gear back to the wrong tooth again.

Best way to tension a second gen is to take out all plugs, lossen tensioner, retighten, rorate the motor turn or two, re do tensioner and you should have it right

Yeah nah i screwed it up now :(
I wanted to move the cam over a bit so i put the gear back on and tighteted it up with a bolt, moved it a bit (it spun :S) so i had to move it back to where i thought it was and now im stuck with a front cam gear with no timing belt!
Might just release the tensioner and start over again

You will need to take off the tensioner to allow you to get belt back on and it is a must to check the belt and timing marks as you replace the belt in a anti clock wise movement. When belt is back on and you are happy with timing marks lining up it is a simple task of putting tensioner back on and attaching it to the tensioner spring ,DONT FORGET TO LOCK IT OFF AFTER YOU HAVE ROTATED ENGINE AND CHECKED THE TIMING MARKS ARE ALL OK.. the spring tensions the timing belt ..Turn the engine over a couple of times via the crank bolt and recheck the timing marks to be sure and put all the covers back on etc and you have finished..
Much easyier than the te-Tl Range of 24 valve engines..

Hmmmmm...
Was sure my mecho did it without taking the tensioner off though.
Anyway thanks for the info mate but ive given up. I'd rather wait a while for someone who can fix it properly rather then me **** it up more.
Aint touching the timing belt on my DOHC i tell you that right now!
