I did a search and read lots about ppl having the same problem as me and fixing it. But couldn't find anyone saying how to go about it.

How do i clean the rust off a Dizzy?
What do i need to use?
What are the risks involved?

Any support or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance Brad

If you dont know the last time it was changed it would probably be a good idea if your going to the trouble of taking it off to just replace it.

For the V6 i think it was $50 off to replace it...
Umm to do it theres 2 screws to loosen the cap and just make sure the engine is at TDC i think piston 1 so that way the roto button is facing a certain way which will allow you to slide the cap off.

Is yours a 4 or 6 cyl?

Also, check the rotor button while the caps off. If in doubt of condition.. replace.

If its a 4cyl, pull the hall sensor plug off the distributor (black rubber plug on the distributor body that faces upwards) and check for corrosion inside. If it contains any form of corrosion (white or green powder, or rusty) clean it.

How do you know when the engine is a TDC for piston 1 without completely taking it apart to check ??? lol

Easy, line up the timing mark on the pully with TDC on the belt cover, it will be 1 at TDC on either the firing stroke or the intake stroke. If you have a TR, you can take off the actuator and this will give you more room, on the TS it is harder to reset the butterfly so do not do this.

Cheers,

Ive heard a few people have problems with dizzy caps on these cars, and I like to keep my car as reliable as possible and in peak performance, so have been wantign to replace it for good measure or just check out the condition to see if it would benefit from a new one.

It's easier to replace as most have said, I know on the 4cyl it is a very simple job and replacing the rotor at the same time. The 6cyl cant be too much more complicated, I always do the cap/rotor/steel spark plug leads/and NGK spark plugs. All up around $50 - 70 from memory, car always feels better.

Worth cleaning the TB also.

the cap off
with care
you use a small bladed screwdriver and scrape of the deposits from the contacts
if you have some wet and dry or sand paper you can use that to clean off the contacts
same with the plug leads

wd 40 then metholated spirits to finish

the carbon tipped pick up in the middle if the cap for the rotor
reguires care as it can break

check for cracks inside and out

I was quoted 65 bucks for a Champion cap and 95 for a Bosch at Repco the other week. Autobarn wanted 75 for the Bosch.

If you can't get the cap off because the rotor is in the way put one of the screws back in and give the the engine turn over with the key and try again. Magna buff helped me out with this a little while ago. Need to have the rotor pointing at no 5 (or 2 - I think they are diagonally opposite). I just kept turning it over until it stopped at the right place.

Just undo the bolts, lift the manifold up a little if you do not want to take of the control motor. Saves frigging around with position etc.
