hey all,
about a month ago, i was driving with the aircon going, and i went to change the vents blowing air from the face to the windshield position, and as it was changing, i heard a loud clunk, and then just a heap of air blowing, but it wasnt coming from the windshield vents, the air was blowing from the side vents, and it sounded as though it was blowing out from behind the dash.
i cant seem to figure out whats wrong and its going to be 32 degrees or more for the next week here in adelaide. i need the car everyday this week and i would like to be able to use the aircon.
at the moment it does work, but because the air isnt coming from the vents, it doesnt really cool the car down.
if anyone has any ideas please help me as i cant stand not having an aircon
thanks, charlie
It sounds like it might be linkage connection or maybe air outlet mode selector damper motor. Remove the driver's side lower panel, which is just above brake & accelerator "padels", have some light source and see what happens when you try to select different outlet.

It could just be a cable. Can you get down in the passenger footwell and look up inside that section while someone moves the knob? (and can I watch lol)
I'm guessing this because after I had the heater core replaced I had to take the car back to the radiator place for them to fix because the temperature knob wouldn't sit on 'cold.' The guy said there's just cables under there and one needed adjusting.

Hey Charlos, I posted more or less this same question about a week ago, I had the same trouble with air blowing somewhere but the climate control wouldn't change directions. My car is a KH Verada so I'm not sure if they carried-over the same Climate Control setup into the TJ/KJ, but a few of the forum members suggested to me that it was the controlling rod for the Climate Control falling out of the clip connecting it to the actuating motor.
If this is still the same setup and that is the problem you're having then it's a 5 minute fix. I know nothing about climate control and it was explained to me that you just take the shroud off in the drivers footwell (3 screws and a clip) and you will see up on the side of the heater box a rod with a threaded end. In my car this rod was just hanging down, having fallen out of the clip on the actuator motor. All I had to do was push the threaded end back into the clip and tighten the clip with a pair of needle-nose pliers. The problem is now solved.
Not sure why it happnened to begin with, maybe the clip just gets gradually weaker over time and I will eventually have to replace it, but at the moment it is working perfectly.
Hope this helps.

i acctually just fixed it.
the rod was still in place, but when i pressed the buttin to chance the vents, the motor wasnt moving the rod at all, i had a play with the white arm thingos that the rod connects to (just moved them a bit) and then i pressed the button again, and it all started working fine. i think the motor will be replaced soon as it is moving rather slow.
i dont think the motor would be that hard to replace. when i looked i saw a few screws holding it to the side of the heater box and just a wiring loom pluged into it.

try some dry lube.. like you use on the window runners.. cos my vents got stuck exactly like that.. gave them a bit of a giggle.. and bit of lube.. now everything moves perfect.. for the vents at least.. the climate control works great!! if you like 17 degrees... lol.. the heater motor is stuck.. and i haven't been able to free it up yet.. :(
