Hey peoples,

Im running pacemaker extractors, hi flow cat and a straight through muffler with a 3 inch dump pipe on the end, ill get the brand in the morning for you. My question is, i want a louder and deeper tone without going illegal. i dont want to spend to much money so has anyone got any suggestions. i saw a magna the other day which sounded pritty good, it had what looked to be a 3 inch canon on it, but it didnt sound like a tin can, which is what im looking for. i like the tone i got, but what i want something a bit more pushy. should i just leave it or has anyone got any suggestions.

edit: i see people with lukey exhaust and alike but i want something which ssounds deep and looks good as well. i herd these mufflers are only loud when put to the floor, is this true. i have done a search before anyone says that but i found alot of people want an exhaust which doesnt drone or make noise until you put the foot down, but i want something which does make noise even if my foot isnt down but isnt something that sounds like a tin can as said before. as you might of guessed, i dont mind the droning noise :)

thanks all mike

I think you could get the sound your after by removing the rear muffler, add it to the middle if the exhaust and then add the cannon to the end....

Or remove the rear muffler and add the cannon with a resonator inline.

i was thinking about that, can a cannon replace one of the mufflers in the middle of the exhaust and sound pritty good or will it make not much of a difference. the otha thing is im getting cams and an intake plenum in the coming months, i know what they do for your performance but what will they do mto the sound of the engine/ exhaust. im not wanting something so you can here me from miles away, i just want something with a deeper note and a bit louder. probably wont replace the one i got for a while yet, i just wanted to do my research on what options i have.

Thanx for the quick replies

I think wait untill you got your cams and intake. they can change the way it sounds.

Mike,

Firstly, its just called an exhaust tip, a dump pipe is the piece piping which is attached to the exhaust outlet of a turbo. Regarding your question, I'd say the cheapest, easiest way to make your current exhaust louder would be to have the center resonator replaced by a piece of straight pipe. Will it be illegal?? I have no idea, I'm not an acoustics engineer, nor do I know what the legal noise limit is where you live. What I do know however is that quite a few magna owners here in Qld have done this and not had any trouble with the law.

go x-force varex muffler, comes with a remote, so you can turn it on loud or soft
i think there is a demo on you tube of it.
when cops pull you over, go sorry officer it must have been the car next to me, keep the remote in center console or somthing

Very happy with the deep throaty sound of the dual outlet Magnaflow muffler. No need to take out any resonators.

i would have to cut my back bumper for that one wouldnt I. how much did that muffler cost? does anyone in WA know someone who can professionally cut my back bumper to fit a muffler?

thankyou all for your replies looks like i got a few options.

You should be able to get a Magnaflow fully installed for no more than $500. It's a fully free flow 5" x 8" polished stainless steel unit, part #14805. The sound really is excellent.

Attached are a couple of pics of a normal Magna tail with a similar Magnaflow muffler. If I remember right, this guy cut back the bumper plastic himself.

i used to run (on my last TH) a lukey rear section 2.5" and had the first muffler cut out, sounded nice and throaty and raspy, not tinny at all. and not droney on the highway. on the current magna i have a redback system with all the mufflers still in place, however the rear muffler has been changed to a cannon (at drift angle too - but no i didn't do it, the previous owner did). it is a bit louder (and dronier) than my previous setup and sounds good, but i prefer the old setup. it sounded better, but it still sounds good the way it is.

one thing to think about is ur car is auto, and living with a constant drone might actually drive u nuts if its that loud, its a reason lots of people like the lukey mufflers because the noise doesnt increase until u push it. just have a think about how u'd like to be constantly hearing the exhaust drone just while cruising... u may say u can block it out with the stereo, but then the whole thing could get annoying

ok after reading about different exhaust systems and combinations, looks like the magnaflow muffler will suit me the best or replacing a resonator with a canon. do you think it would be hard to cut the back bumper so the twin pipes could be fitted, or would it look ok sitting below the bumper? for everyone that has replacedf the resonator with the canon how much has it cost you in the past?

thanx mike

Just make sure you put the biggest bodied, glass-packed muffler you can on the back. Removing hot dogs make it tinny, removing resonators just make it sound like a toy as you lose depth to the note. The stainless brand name rear mufflers often have quality packing, get the cataloque out at your local muff shop. Magnaflow, Lukey/Walker, Zetti, etc etc.

There are plenty of non-stainless muffs with big bodies and plenty of packing. Exhaust Traders at Tamworth make several good units. Check the catalogue diagrams for glass packed body and NO resonance chamber!! That's important on the Magna. Keep us appraised.

I guess you could replace 1st muffler just after the res to a straight through hotdog. I have a complete straight through system from Berklee and it was droney as hell when I had auto tranny. Was really annoying so that the coins in the coin box danced. Now its manual and its no-where near as bad.

You say you dont mind droning, but believe me, you will mind it after a while. I regret going the way i have now :(

hmmm i suupose its hard for me to say as i have only sat in cars with dorning for short distances such as half an hour trips, so maybe its out of line. my comment about a deeper and louder note though still stands. does anyone know if mettams mufflers do magnaflow mufflers? that muffler really has my attention, probly wont get it until after the cams and plenum is in. for anyone that has cut there back bumper to fit a muffler in, how much has it cost you in the past.

is it possible to lower the muffler so its straight yet under the bumper without cutting the back bumper, until i get it lifted up again later on when i get some more money.

Definately.. my tips are all below the bumper. I didn't touch the bumper at all. Just tell them how you want it and they will weld the hooks to the muffler so it sits the way you want it.
