hey all.

i got a really cool xmas pressy.
two pioneer 6" splits (TS-CS1625)
the are rated at 60W nominal and 220W max

they sound about a billion times better than the stockies.

just two quick questions:

1 - am im gettin the best perf out of them by connecting them directly to my h/u (an old pioneer DEH-P4650MP, 50w per channel)

2 - what speakers does someone recommend in the rear parcel shelf. i was thinking 2/3 ways, im trying to stay away from 6X9s. any suggestions? (budget is about $200 absolute max per speaker)

1: No, you'll only be getting about 22wrms per chanel from the head unit, which is about 1/3 of what they require.

2: As for rear speakers, it all depends on what you want out of them i suppose, and whether you want to power them by amp or head unit... i'll leave this for the pro's to answer in more depth.

Any reason why you want to keep away from 6x9's? I've got some Eclipse point source 6x9's in my magna running as splits. They're an awesome speaker for around the $200 mark.

ive just heard that 6x9s physically are inefficient (like if you look into the actual sound waves etc). apparently some of the sound gets cancelled out, etc. which i sorta understand cos of their irregular shape. i dunno, on the other hand i may be talking out of my ass.

on the front split subject, is the 22W because of my particular h/u? or h/u in general. what sort of amp do u reckon, if its h/u in general

I dont care what "They say"
if it sounds good to your ears, go for it!
The heavy metal that pumps out of my JBL GTO 6x9's is so crisp, clear and loud it will blow you away, not bad for a $130 set of speakers.

Some people hate them, some love them, I am for one a lover, i love rear fill and love my 6x9's and see nothing wrong with a decent set of them! Of course thats my opinion and you can make up your own mind on the subject but if you hear a great set of 6x9's for the price they cant be beat

And HU's in general give that amount of power.

Fair enough mate, but i probably wouldnt worry 'too' much about those type of inneficiencies, unless you plan on entering in SQ comps and the like. Being the rear stage it probably doesnt matter as much, seeing as you have splits in the front now anyway.

As for an amp.. depends on your long term plans. If you want to amp some rear speakers or a small sub you can get a 4 channel. If not, then you can get a 2 channel amp fairly cheaply. I think the 2channel pioneers are under the $150 mark, and that'd suit fairly well.

You'll find most head units are around the 20wrms mark; with the exception of some upper market ones.

Dude I don't know who told you about 6x9's being less efficient.

What does happen to a 6x9 is because of irregular weight and force distribution compared to a similar say 6inch cone, most of the time you will loose some of the upper midrange response. However as a benefit you will have superior bass extension ( for similar speakers ) over a 6inch because of the greater cone area that a 6x9 gives you. This means that a 6x9 has about the same cone area as a 7.5-8inch round speaker.

For most people who mount them in the rear will not notice the lack of that upper mid bass because it will coming from whatever is in the front ( well it should ). This means that they are perfect for a bit a bass extension if you do not choose or want to run a dedicated subwoofer, although personally, I would. If this is the case and you do not wish to run a subwoofer, I would definately suggest that you amp all your speakers, even off a smallish 4x50WRMS will do the trick. Mid Bass / Bass needs power.

one of my first setups had 6x9s in the rear. JBL Gt they are, and overall, they sounded quite decent. Nothing wrong with 6x9s at that price point.

Only drama I had with them, was once my sub went in, they were causing all sorts of Nastys, and delaying, and adding peaks to my subbass. To fix this, I had to highpass the 6x9s, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of having them.

Something to keep in mind. Apart from that, I hope your new speakers serve you well. Keep us informed.

Get them hooked up through a decent 2ch amp and you're laughing. Good quality splits love lots of clean power  Got a set of MB Quart reference's in mine atm :)
