A week ago, had a good car, some minor issues but nothing dramatic. I booked the car in to get roadworthy done. 2 days later, paid to get new wheel hub, steering rack, hood lining fixed, steering wheel fixed, bulbs replaced.. this was all ok and paid and left.

Immediately after reversing out of driveway, abs makes a lot of noise and the light stays on and disables the abs. So i tell them about it, and they couldnt fix it on the spot. Anyway, long story short, it's supposed to be fixed free of charge when I can get it down there.

Before i left again, he said not to drive it too much, as "the safety cert" only lasts 1,000km. I thought it was 2,000km but I could be wrong.
Anyway, started the car up yesterday, which brought a very rough idle and lots of smoke from the exhaust.. cleared up a bit after warm up and drove like normal with exception of rough idle, which later turned to the car running only on 5 cyl and the temp gauge going spastic. So i checked for leaks, only a small one present, and checked the oil filler cap and dipstick... oil has turned WHITE. Dammit.. Head Gasket is stuffed.

Now.. what I was going to enquire was, does this seem suspicious to anyone that it happened within 400km after getting the roadworthy after the mech said not to drive it 2 much? This seems suss. And secondly, is there anything he could have done which could have triggered this happening? And what could he have done.

I dont know if it's worth paying the money to get the engine up to scratch, or buy a 2nd engine, or, simply sell the car to the wreckers as it's being a lot of hassle.

it sounds sus but at the same time, cars are cars, they can fail from the factory or they can last 500,000kms

its no concilation for you though, and no mechanic is going to say he may have done something that could have jepordised the cars life span.

having said that, my mate who was a mechanic toyota in sydney said he knew of guys who did roadies/safety certs who would fault a car and then offer the owner cheap rates on labour to fix it, so as to strum up some business

Hope something goes your way bud
