There are some knowledgeable ppl on this forum. Just wondering what the main differences are between the second gen V6s and the third gen engines (other than 3 litre versus 3.0/3.5 and 12 valve versus 24 valve). Mitsubishi made a lot of noise about the variable length intake on the second gen V6 and I just noticed my TJ does not have this. Would TJ benefit from Variable Length Intake (probably would need ECU that can accomodate this). In reality it is no doubt Mitsubishi saving a few dollars by dropping the Variable Length Intake. I can recall some manufacturer (can't recall which one) just recently making noises about their newly introduced Variable length Intake.

I can tell you that they sit in opposite directions in the engine bay.

both Ford AND Holden have variable intake runners.
i know ford started it on the ef / el 6cycl and holden had it on the VZ V6 Calais - the 190kw motors had the variable intake manifold.
the (apparent) only difference between the 190 and lower output holden six, is that the 190 has the vari manifold on it.
its a great idea - gives ya power when ya want it, and when you dont, will return good fuel econ too :)
cant help on the other part of the post, but i know ford and holden have it - prolly other manufacturers as well, but i think the more rely on VVTI for power and econ.

The HF Holden 6 (VZ and VE) also has cam phasers on the exhaust cam. The VE LFV6 also picked up the variable inlet manifold.
