Hi guys,
having a problem with the auto in the ts.
What happens is, as soon as i put it into any gear, it immediately stalls. If i stall up the torqure converter first and then change into gear.. same thing happens.
No this is not an ISC fault..
I'm suspecting the TCU.. but just wondering if anybody has had a similar problem, and can confirm this.
Cheers in advance for any replies.

your profile says its a 4 cyl
only way is to try another unit if a battery reset didnt work
definatly electrical all auto wiring goes through the tcu and engine management computer

Cheers mate, yes its a 4cyl.
So, it could be either a TCU 'or' ECU fault?

diagnostics list say TCU - then pedal switch then inhibitor switch
ecu (passengers side firwall )might be ok as you can start the car
tcu first the box is ok mechanically and has not gone into fail safe
if the tcu was working it should have given you 2 or 3rd gear and reverse

Alrighty... if i disconnect the lock up clutch control solenoid plug, i can get the car to engage gear without stalling... although it engages like somebody's hitting the firewall with a sledge hammer. lol
Still suspect TCU though.. as this controls the lock up solenoid pulse... i think :p

got it working .. you legend
TCU if engaging with a thump
when was the auto last serviced may need new oil and filter also ?
pedal switch at the top of the accelerator pedal is a switch wired to the tcu and automatic
check it is making contact ,is not broken or not working

I just finished changing the whole trans yesterday, so its got fresh fluid and a new filter kit in it... i was told by 2 auto specialists it was at fault. Well, seems to have done nothing at all. *sigh* lol

what are you going to do next ?
TCU is located below the radio on the TR/TS 4 cyl
the radio and console needs to come out to get at it easily

The TCU is next.. i'll hopefully grab one from the wreckers next weekend.. so yeah, i'll go from there.

Alrighty... thought i'd update for the sake of other members.
Turns out TCU was the fault.
So, if you ever get the problem where the car instantly stalls when engaging gear... check the TCU.

I think I might have the same problem but maybe not as bad. Mine falls low but probably only stalls 1/4 of the time I dont put revs up a bit before I put it in D but goes close very close stalling alot of the time and is a bit of a thump when I put it in gear.
Sounds right? How much does the TCU replacement cost?
It doesnt worry me much but if its not much to replace Ill do it.

It's now becoming a more common problem in the magna, the transmission control unit, does exactly what the name states.
You can find them from anywhere from $100 to $200 second hand, brand new is double depending on where its from. Go second hand, most units are reliable or a member might have one for sale, also some on ebay sometimes. Wreckers are your friend as most cars have been in an accident and the TCU still works fine in them.

Nope your problem is completely different. I had no drive at all, the engine would stall because the transmission would not allow it to continue turning (instant lockup). Have you tried adjusting idle speed yet?

On the "screw" near the fuel injectors as per the repairs manual?
If so, yes, all the way out which helps a tad but still gets angry at times.
When I get sick of it I put the Auto Trans on Power and it barely does it, however that means more petrol used which isnt good in these times.
Cant find what's wrong with it and no mechanic has been able to tell me.
Is it still possible and likely it's the TCU?
Cheers.

Have you had your fault codes readout?

Nope. Probably should go to a Service Centre and check it out properly but being a student with FA money has me delaying it.

Have you downloaded the workshop manual at all? It shows you which terminal to probe on the diagnostics plug. And also has a chart of fault codes.

I have a Gregory's workshop manual, yes. I'll have a peak tomorrow coz I have no idea where its at atm.
sounds to me the lockup clutch and/or solenoid is defective
my transmission in my tm had this same problem, way to fix was new torque converter

Thats initially what i thought too... but turns out it was fine.

do a search for a thread called " engine fault codes"
i was having dramas with my car and linked a couple of really helpful threads into my thread.
was mostly to do with the ecu but im pretty sure there were a heap of TCU fault codes , and how to read them in there as well.
