Or LEDS im really not fussed. I apologize if the description ive given isnt enough, ill post some pics as to what im trying to do!

Umm alrighty... that plactic surround has two screws holding it in place (top 2 arrows). Undo those and pull out the little trip meter reset button (bottom arrow). Just grap it and pull on it firmly. It'll pop out. Then remove the plastic surround. It'll be a bit fiddly but you'll get it out.

Next theres a series of bolts that hold the cluster itself in place. (i think theres 4? sorry i havent done this in ages)
Once those are undone, remove the cluster (note, do not turn the cluster upside down.. try to keep it up the way that it sits naturally in the car at all times).
Then you can undo the little globe holders one by one and replace the globes. You can buy small rubber/silicone covers for them that change the illumination colour, or you can buy coloured globes/LED's.. whichever you prefer.
On top of the cluster theres a white plastic piece held on by two small screws. This contains the lights that light up the face area of the cluster.
Re-assumbly is just the same but in reverse.

If you need more help.. i can go outside and pull my car apart for more detailed photos.. its not doing anything at the moment anyway lol.

Such a quick response!!
Thanks so much for that! All detailed and pics!
Might go get to work on the TR now!:)
Once again, Thanks!
Edit: If anyone knows how to change the clock light that would be greatly appreciated!

In the instrument cluster, there are two lights shining from the front, these are T5, and there are 4 main lights shining from behind, these are T10. Footwell lights are also T10. Remember these names when searching for LEDs on ebay etc.
If you go for LEDs, make sure you get wide-beam ones; they usually have flat faces, and usually are multi-LED. You can get a pair of decent ones for about $8. If you want real brightness and don't mind paying the extra, you can get the high-power single LED ones, the LED usually looks like one big yellow blob.
PS. I assume from the way you said it that you have both footwell lights; for those that only have the driver's side, just nab the same light holder from a wreckers; the wiring is all in place in the passenger's side, just plug in the new holder and hey presto!

Anyone know what the bulbs are for in the dash? (climate control and three buttons below it) And if they are easilt changed?
I would like to make it look like a VW with the blue lighting, and hence change everything. Has anyoen does this, I woudlnt mind getting the best bulbs/LED's, but even so, will it look like a VW dash and have strong and even lighting and look good.
Oh and I think that doing so it would be OK to just leave the top shining lights on the speedo cluster stock/white?
Cheers,
Ollie

Anyone know what the bulbs are for in the dash? (climate control and three buttons below it) And if they are easilt changed? They're weird ones, I haven't found replacements anywhere:confused: They're about a T5, but instead of using a wedge base they have extended wires which wrap around the base of the holders.
I've used red "condoms" (silicon sleeves) on all of my central console ones, not too hard to do. Would prefer LED, but haven't found replacements, and though a standard 5mm size is about right, the only 12V ones I have found have been piss weak, and there isn't enough room to hook in resistors to make your own ones.
Maybe the entire lighting loom for the console could be hacked, dropping the voltage to a suitable one? Will have a look at the schematic when I get the chance...
PS. Don't know about climate control, but with the standard air-con system there's only one light at the top middle of it, which you can reach from the front with a bit of difficulty. Hook your fingertips over it, twist, and out it pops. Just undo the four(?) screws and pull down the controls as far as you can.

Thinking of giving this a crack as well considering everything else in the interior is red/black, now to just do the instrument cluster. Quick question, when you remove the cluster itself, I understand not to tilt it but is it a matter of "45 degree tilt and it's over" or "even 1 degree will kill it"?

Its not that sensitive... just dont let it face down, or dont shake it upside down etc etc...
Reason is that the tacho has a silicone filled dampening mechanism and theres a good chance it'll leak.

Ah, so basically as long as it's upright it'll be fine. Not too hard a task then. :)

To get the *** thing out you have to tilt it down:P

True.
Not to an extent that causes damage i wouldnt think.
But in a true workshop enviroment.. i'd say you're supposed to remove the steering wheel first, to prevent from having to tilt it excessively.. pfft...

I don't know about everyone else, but I've had my cluster out numerous times, even had it lying on it's face (ie. angled say 45degrees), and have never had an issue with the tacho. Maybe I just got lucky, or maybe you actually have to invert it to get any leakage.

Have you ever taken a front parklight globe out of your car? those are T10's.

What's wrong with going via ebay? With a bit of looking, you can find much better LEDs for a fraction of what they'd cost you locally.
Want pics? Just do a google image search (http://images.google.com.au/images?gbv=2&svnum=10&hl=en&safe=off&q=t10+led&btnG=Search+Images).
The silicon sleeves should be readily available at practically any car store. I think I had to order mine in when I was living in a rural area for a while, but they came in in like a day.

Put the slips in, they look like complete ****, Will go and buy the LEDS tomorrow, Are the bulbs that shine from the top of the speedo T5's? because the T10's in the back of the speedo console are alot bigger than the ones mounted on top?

yeah got some 10mm wide angles today, except for they dont fit into the holders very well :/ ... might go to an electronics place now and see what i can do :)

fitted 4 t10 wide angle leds to the back of the console, and two t5 leds to the top ( Actually found some to fit the holders :O:O!!)
Looks good so far, will wait till tonight to post pics..
Only problem im having is the t10s arent coming through the console real well.:doubt:

Does anyone know how to remove the clock bulb near the cluster?Do you mean the bulbs in the analogue clock? If so, need to pop out the clock and disconnect (just lever it out from the edges), you'll see two twist holder things on the back, these are the same bulbs as the rest of the console, ie. T5 size but not actually T5. I've got red "condoms" on mine, but it's a bit dull in certain situations (looks much cooler though).
Might contemplate a DIY LED replacement, there aren't any stock 12V's that go anywhere near doing the job, but I'm thinking with these holders you might be able to get away with hanging the resistor out the back of the holder...

Sounds like a plan... I might try and pop the clock out this friday when ive got some spare cash lying around for yet again more LEDS lol
Then ive somehow gotta do the ignition circle.. cruise control..footrest and airconditioner lights too :doubt:
