hey folks, just bought myself my first car. 1900 for a glx manual 5spd manual magna. it's a light grey/blue metallic colour. no rust, paint is in perfect condition, no fading, no dents etc and yeh. only thing that isn't working is the fuel guage =(
so, basically i'm gunna list a few queries/problems i have and if you could answer any/all of them that'd be great. if you could include approx costs of fixing stuff thatd be great too.
so here goes
1. fuel guage doesn't work (it moves down to the 1/4 mark but no lower so obviously not the fuse)
2. it's a 4banger carby( ) so has a bit of a whirring noise when driving. any way to change this or is this expected and just get a stereo to drown it out?
3. will i be able to cut holes in the door panels(no door pockets as it's a glx) to accomodate some 6.5" speakers or just get some new 4s for the front? Also gunna put 6x9's in the back, again same deal just cut thru the carpet stuff on the parcel shelf? aaaaand, it has stock radio casette in there, radio is very crap as it cuts out constantly for long periods of time. a new head unit should solve this yes?
4. what are some basic mods i can do to the glx. i'm not talkin performance i'm talking accomodation mods. ie armrest from verada or w/e installed, upgraded seats/comfy seat covers, rarara (i can't think of much, hence me asking for ideas from you guys/gals :) )
cheers for any help you give me

A1: Find the wire from the fuel sender unit, and earth it out. If the guage starts rising as its earthed, the guage is fine.. which means the sender unit in the tank needs to be replaced.
2. it's a 4banger carby( ) so has a bit of a whirring noise when driving. any way to change this or is this expected and just get a stereo to drown it out?
2A: Do you mean a high pitched sound sort of like a vacuum cleaner having sex with a food processor/blender? If so, this is normal. Ignore it... turn stereo up... get louder exhaust.. whatever you can do. lol

3A: Best and nicest option here is to find a set of verada or elite speaker pods/map pockets. You should be able to fit 6.5"s in them no problems at all. Yep 6x9's, just cut carpet and basically bolt in, but you'll need to run wiring to them. Head unit might solve it, unless its the aerial thats playing up. But either way, at least you'll have CD's to listen to with an aftermarket unit. :)

4A: Search the forums for pics of other peoples 2nd gens... you'll get some good and nifty ideas for mods from them. The most popular interior mods are basically pulling everything out of the interior of a higher end magna or verada. Some even had comfy electric seats you can flog too. Just scour some wreckers for written off veradas.
Congrats on the new car too. Get some pics of her up asap! :D

baaaaaahahahahaha that's EXACTLY what it sounds like. think i'll leave exhaust alone as i dnt wanna wake parents at some ungodly hour 4 or 5 times a week but yeh, def be doin the stereo. the speaker pods seem like a good idea, think i'll spend the next week or so browsing some wreckers =)
i'll get some pics asap and yeh. cheers for advice and i'll get onto it asap. oh btw, any idea how much a replacement fuel guage sender thing would cost? and labour cost too?
cheers

How many km's has it done , I brought a 1993 GLX auto wagon with 180.xxx km's, motor and transmission are good , body and paint reasonable and interior good for $250 .
As for performance it really goes well considering it's only a carby 2.6 and no whirring sounds!

it is a 5 speed manual so that'd add a small amount of cost and it had done 195, xxx
so pretty good. when i say the paint and exterior is perfect i mean like it's better than the 2006 mitsubishi triton my dad just bought, no dents or anything. the interior is in good nick, the usual "bumsag" in the chairs but i'll be gettin seat covers. no roof sag, has a new clutch and brakes and a new exhaust(not a loud one just a newer version of the same exhaust)
so yeh i was pretty happy with it plus i talked the guy into giving me 20 days warranty which is when i wud expect any problems to show up in.
any extra advice would be greatly appreciated guys, cheers
kym (and yes, although it's not exactly fast, for a 2.6 carby it goes a LOT better than i expected it to :) )
