Umm, where to start. Obviously the line-out from your laptop is only going to be 2 channel. You have at least 4 channels in your car. It will work, but you just lose two channels. What you could do is opt for an external sound card that has more channels. Usually can be done via USB interface. Another problem you face is the fact that most AUX inputs from headunits in cars (assuming you will be using the headunit?) only have 2 channel inputs anyway.

As for powering the laptop, the quickest would be to use the AC adapter it came with, and plug that into an inverter. Don't need anything wtih high wattage output, since its just a laptop. You may want to leave the battery in there, for startup and shutdon processes, especially if you switch your car off while its trying to shut down.

You might get really annoyed (if not, the passener might) at having a laptop there, that you need to swing out every time you want to switch tracks or whatever. Again, you could mount a screen in your dash.

Hop on MEA or mp3car or whatever that website is. There are literally hundreds of options, combinations and ways of doing it.

Yes, it would work, it's the best way you could do it. Your laptop's onboard soundcard probably sucks though so invest in a USB Sound Blaster (Audigy) processor or something...

As for power, cigarette lighter step-up adaptors are available, other than splicing it into the back of the lighter socket thats about the only option you have.

Heres what I would do, mount the laptop in the boot, fit a flip up (presuming you want to keep your headunit) LCD display (off eBay will do) which can be wired into the video out on the laptop, and then something like a Media Center remote inside the car with the IR receiver fitted somewhere in the dash. That way, you should be able to see whats on the laptop screen through the flip up LCD, and control it with the remote. Just run media center on it from boot to control your music.

Then if you really wanted you could run a USB hub from the laptop to the front of the car, say mounted under the front seat, which you could connect a keyboard and mouse to or a usb key or something when you want to.

The whole setup would be completely invisible to outsiders, and would be pretty functional inside the car with little effort.

edit* oh and connect audio by running a 3.5mm - 3.5mm cable from the laptop headphone jack/line out to the aux in on the headunit.
