evening all
its been a little while since i tried said problem I am posting about, but it was something that came to mind and i realised i couldnt do it - see below for explanation.
anyhow - when i traded my old car in for the rada, i took the whole stereo system out - H/U amp, and rear 6x9's (omg - hyundai elantra stock rears in a sedan are 6x9?!)
so yeah took all that out, and the day i got the rada, i got the head unit put in no probs with the help of the harness adaptors, but when i went to put the rear 6x9's into the parcel shelf to discover that the basket is too 'full bodied' for lack of a better term, to fit.
oh yeah - these are Clarion 6x9's
went to Strathfield to see what they suggested - and apart from being useless, they said that i could either cut the parcel shelf a lil to fit these 'larger' 6x9s or buy some Pioneer which arnt as big apparently.
has anyone else encountered problems fitting 6x9's into thier parcel shelfs of thier KL etc - or did yours just fit in no probs?
i am running my Alpine head unit through my stock speakers - and while they are VERY good for stock i want to be able to use the much nicer speakers i have sitting *somewhere*
my understanding is it is illegal for you to cut the parcel shelf as it is an integral structural part of the car?
oh yeah - i did a search for "KL 6x9s" and "KL verada Rear Speakers" but the amount of hits i got back was VERY large and mostly older stuff.
so was hoping for a fresh bit of help / advice :)
cheers in advance
oh - i shall go and hunt down these Clarion speakers - they are here in the house somewhere, just gotta find them, stuff is everywhere these days.

u wont be able to search 'KL', 3 characters or more ;)
i'd say for what its worth, just buy another brand and fit them... what are they, like $60 on special? whats that, 3 cartons of smokes :P
messing with the parcel shelf would make it defective (however small the change)
so yeah, new 6x9s, throw those out or ebay :)

Not sure how relevant this is, or how legit - but when I replaced the ones in my TL it was a tight fit to get (purely coincidental) my clarions in!
anyhow, there was a thread on the AMC that suggested if you scratched your rear screen to take you vehicle to a dealer and show them the decaying seal/weather strip around the screen. they end up replacing the whole screen if this is the case so there's no probs if you damaged it whilst getting your new speakers out/in. i didn't damage mine, but i did get the screen replaced and the electric seat fixed and fuel gage (they were great - even let me print off a few pages of the service manual, just let me walk right in and find what i needed).
fyi - i could get the factory out np, and get the clarions in np, however the angle at which the outer dimension spans the magnet is quite short and the circumference of the magnet was quite large, so the speaker didn't sit flush (sorry if all that doesn't make sense - it's all about the angle of the dangle). anyhow, i found a lip around the speaker cut out where the lip was on a slight angle towards the centre. I used a pair of pliers and gently straightened it (so not to damage the duco - even though it's inside the boot and under the parcel shelf) and hey presto they sit flush.

damn - do i at least get bonus points for trying to search first?
they cost me closer to 90bucks i think - had them a year.
brought them from WOW - they are actually pretty good speakers, they work very well amped as well, they are the only thing i have purchased from WOW that still work and i havnt had to take back due to it ****ing up!
oh - and Mackay tax was also on that purchase price.
and a carton of alpines costs about 80 as well :P
not that im smoking anymore
EuRoZac - i think what you are saying is that people used to just shove the speakers in pretty roughly and if they scratched the rear screen and damaged it, took it back to Mitsu and got them to replace it under warrenty?
sounds a little dodgy to me
seeing as im on the coast now, things like car speakers should be cheaper to come across, so i might do as spaceback suggested and just ebay them for anything i can get
for the record - these clarions are GREAT for pumping out CHER! at max volume with min distortion :bowrofl:

I think you need some spacers.... I read through this pretty quick, I don't know if you want it too look complete stock, but depending on how the stock speaker covers look you could still make it look stock to the non-mitsubishi employee.
So just get some MDF to raise the mounting ledge for the speaker, and you'll be done, pumping out the Cher like it's nobody's business. You can also buy spacers, but if you have a jigsaw and spare time, you can make them yourself for your specific purpose. Unless you wanna make angle spacers, which with wood isn't fun, lol

yeah i had an issue with my TJ magna. i bought some sexy cadence 6x9s, and mitsubishis rediculously designed parcel shelf was such that the magnet hit on part of the boot opening spring. had to put spacers in and it was a major pain in the ass.

If i could tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrn back tiiiiiiiiime!
haha - il stop there
cheers for the heads up about making spacers - i shall hopefully give it a go on the weekend providing i get around to buying some mdf - a stock look isnt really what im after and i am never in the back anyhow so i wont see it.
im sure il be able to rig something up to make it look somewhat factoryish :)
i found them thismorning as well
they are: Clarion SRR6986 - 6x9's 2ways - 350Watt peak power, cost me $240 from WOW Sight And Sound in Mackay 8months ago!
im glad il get to use these again - i miss them.
thanks for the help :)

installed them today :)
took all of 2mins per side.
the hole in the parcel shelf for them was strangely bigger this time around - i dont know how or why but they fit perfectly now lol *looks innocent*
they sound good... but only marginal increase in performance / sound quality - not quite as good as i remember them being...
might put my Amp into the car as well... coz i know it goes good with them.
took a few mins of tuning thru the headunit to get it all sounding good - i can get the vol louder without much distortion.
i never realised that the stock speakers where only 20W'ers!

Do you know what are in the doors of the TL/KL? Havn't been bothered to take the door trip off and look. Mine has the tweeters on the door where the manual mirror controls would be if the Maggies weren't electronic.
Also, do you know the depth in the doors. Not sure if my Alpines will fit in there.

i havnt pulled my door trims apart either - so i cant really answere that question tht well.
i think they are 6.5inch speakers, and the tweater looks a 'standard' size - think its 1inch.
by the looks of things, there should be a fair bit of clearance behind the trims.
shouldnt be too much hassle getting new alpines back there - i will be doing the same when time and money permitts.
