Hi guy's its been a wile :)
Iv got some problems with my 5 speed, the diff is ready to pop, the input shaft bearing is stuffed and on top of that im leaking a **** load of oil out where it looks like a seal where the driver's side drive shaft goes into the box
So i was thinking of replacing it with a 380 manual box, there should be no probs fitting it, its just the gear ratio's, the 380 has a 4.11 final drive witch is what i want for some extra zip but it also has a shoter 5th gear too!!!!! i seen somewhere that a 380 sits on 2500rpm wile doing 100kph?? how does that work when my magna does the same and its geared taller!!! anyway iv posted up the ratio's to look at
Has anyone here rebuildt a 5speed? do you really need all them special tools? it looks like i could swap the 5th gear from the magna box to the 380 box for better highway cruzing

don't the 380's run wheels/tyres with a larger rolling dia.. ? i wish i could put a different diff ratio in my 4spd auto.. on 100 she is turning along at 2000.. 1st gear finally hit the limiter at 92km/h..

380 sits on 3000 at 100, 3.5 magnas sit on 2600 at 100.
I was under the impression the only difference is the 4.11 gearing vs 3.7 in the magna.

I just thought the 380 would sit on lower rpm doing 100kph because of the bigger 3.8ltr motor, 3000rpm still isnt to bad, i wounder how much more fuel the magna would drink

PM Type40 he'll tell you what his 380 used compared to his older TF and now his TL VR. I'll be on the 380 using more than both.

From reviews I have read the 380 sits on 3,000rpm @100kph. It's only 500rpm higher really.
Any extra fuel you use will mostly only be felt on the freeway/highway.
DO IT!! lol

I remember I found an online gear ratio calculator back when I was considering putting 4.11 dif gears in my box, put in all the details of the magna/380 gear ratios, final drive ratios and wheel dimensions and the results were pretty much the same, only about 500rpm difference when cruising at 100km/h.

The 380 sat on approx 2800 at 100 and the TL 2600. But, the TL uses 2 to 3 litres less fuel on the highway and about 2 less on city cycle. If you can drive a 380 manual. To me it always felt like it needed to grow another gear. The torque that the 3.8 has really negates the shorter 5th gear, but i can see how it would work behind a 3.5. In a lighter car with a more rev happy engine this gearing in the 3rd gen would be an absolute slingshot!
By the way, from what i can gather the second graph you have is wrong. The 3.5's run the same first gear as the 380. And 5th is wrong too! As mentioned by Sports the only difference is the 380 runs 4.11 gears.

Wow, the Auto 3.5 sits way lower than that at 100. About 2000rpm at 100. Are you guys sure that the numbers you have are right for 5th gear?

Well... Looking at the TL 4 A/T ratio in top it is .731 with a finaldrive of 3.269 so it should sit at 2 if not below at 100! lol

Awesome thanks for the info, as for the graph's they should be right, i took them out of the magna and the 380 pdf workshop manuals!!

Really? My owners manual says otherwise! lol Well... To me they felt like the same ratios as the 3.5 but with a shorter diff. The box in the 380 even made the same noises believe it or not.

That is a bit strange, btw does anyone know the ratios for the 3ltr, i always thought the 3ltr and 3.5 were different?

Only first gear. 3.583 (3.0) vs 3.333 (3.5). Im looking at a TH brochure right now and they even have the same diff ratio 3.736.

So why buy a manual magna?
Sell up and get a tippie 3.5
My old subie was at 3300 rpm at 100 in 5th, so ratios are right. A sales brochure has the ratios in it.

:eh: What on earth are you on about??? Why would anyone whose owned a manual magna want to go back to an auto??
If you think that because a manual sits on higher revs at a given speed that it's worse on fuel consumption, then your assumption is flawed.
Oh and I think Type40 got the ****s with his 380, might have had a lemon

Hmmm... I wonder what a 4.111 Final in a magna would be like?
You think accelleration would be much more? Well noticable at least?

at 100 my old AE86 levin was at 4300rpm in 5th.. :) 4.9 diff gears :) not too bad considering she turned to 8500 dailiy :) completley irrelevent.. but the only way to get torque from a hi-comp NA 1.6 twincam is with rediculous gearing

Usually for the better drive experience in the way of direct drive and complete control over power. Then you have the fun of rev matching on downshifts into a fast sweeper, modulating the power on hard launches and the all to tantalising feel of snapping the next gear and lurching forward in momentum. Also the all important lower drive train loss of a manual....more power to play with. :D
In my opinium the drive experience between an auto and manual Magna is chalk 'n' cheese.

I agree totally! The best performance mod that can be done to any 3rd gen is a manual transmission.

Yep in the right conditions any 3.5 manual magna can get into the 14's stock or with a muffler change in the case of base models.
4.11 gears in a manual N/A magna would be a hoot I think, 1st and 2nd gear acceleration would be awsome, hint hint Dave
