Hi all, I searched this and no joy. I am wondering if it (1) is possible and (2 ) is useful to fit an ignition coil pack to my TR 2.6 SE? If it is both, how is it done and what coil pack should I use? I want to get rid of my distributor and the problems it continually presents me. Leads breaking down, tracking in cap, rotor burning on the end, bush wear in the distributor, etc:doubt: :D

mmm good luck with the coil pack:D
Why not just buy a new dizzy and put that in presto solved.
Gotta be cheaper than trying to mod your engine to except a ignition pack.
I put a new dizzy in my 1990 tp 2.6 astron II last month . made a huge difference in how the car drives\feels.

Although it can be done, i'm not sure if its worth the hassle.
But you'll need:

And,

And also a set of coilpacks.
But yeah if i were you, i'd just get a new or used distributor buddy.

thanks for your help I am now a registered subscriber to Jaycar. waiting on info re coil pack. their high energy pack is $89. cheaper than a recoed distributor but runs off the existing hall sensor and coil

I was actually thinking of doing this a while ago but not sure if its worth it.

some twit quoted me $179 for a recoed dizzy! To clean it and replace a bush and pin? 15 minutes work. Unlike some people who have the cash, I look for the cheaper better option. If I can get the coil pack from Jaycar ( will know tomorrow ) for under $200 I am going for it. another .2 of a horsepower :D atw with no dizzy to drive and no more caps, rotors or bushes to replace.

my brand NEW dizzy cost me $163 from repco and i have the same engine as yours:D

I think you will have to drive the dizzy still... because of the hall sensor. But just pull the leads off it. (leave the cap on to prevent condensation entering).

Yeah but a coil pack conversion is cooler :dancin:

yea if ur under 20 a go for wank factor.
he also said tha he wants to do it for under $200, this is under that a it will fix it and no need to make the coil pack fit\work.
You couldn;t completely remove the dizzy could you? or just replace with a pointless system, like an optical system or something to control the timing?
Is there any real advantage to this? Other then reliability?

It would be different though but yeah probably not worth it. Would have been cool though. Another mod that could be done on the 2.6.

I think doing it on a v6, using a commodore coilpack would be good. Seeing as how ignition timings not adjustable on them. I think it'd be a good mod if setup and mapped propperly. :)
Certainly cheaper than any other brand name form of management.

Magnas are a pointless distributor.

There is no points in any magna distributors, or any car past about 1990's actually. Within the dissy is the triggering for the ECU (Cam Angle Sensor), the ignitor, and the distrobution system(rotor and cap).
The CAS tells the ECU where the motor is. The ECU knows which cylinder to fire, and at what timing angle. The rotor has the big swing arm at the end to allow a cylinder to fire early or late depending on load. This is controlled by the ECU, and triggered remotely by the Ignitor, basically to isolate the ECU from the coil due to EMF and current sink.
The reason individual coils (be it 4 coils, still using HT leads, or coil on plug) is useful is to reduce the charge time to discharge time of the coil. The coil needs to spend time off, for various reasons. A motor at 8000rpm rotates 2 rotations (4 stroke remember) every 15ms. This is how long you have to inject fuel, and charge and ignite the coil.
Your standard motor runs around 3.5ms dwell (charge time) and sparks at the end of the dwell. So at 8000rpm, 15ms worth of time is more than enough to fire 1 coil and retain a 11.5ms off time for the coil. Now the 4G's are 4 cylinder, so you then have 14ms of charge time, and 1ms of cool down time.... This is not really acceptable, so you either fit twin spark output coils which halves it, or run individual coils per cylinder.
Thats all well and good, but I have never seen a Astron make anything resembling power above 6000rpm, which allows a larger window for charge... making this a very long post and mute point (i hope you got this far)
So, other than the fact that a bit of scale and burning on dissy caps and rotors is perfectly normal, keep the dissy setup. Bushing does not wear out, and you will not increase performance, reliability or easy of use 1 bit.
