View Full Version : Rattling rear window

I have just got an September 03 build TL sedan. Now, it seems to have this really persistant rear window squeek/rattle that is driving me nuts. I hear that this was a problem with some sedans and was a recall item. I called my local dealer and they said the car had no outstanding recalls and because it is out of warranty i would be best to take it to a windscreen repair place to get them to remove and refit as it would be cheaper. Has anyone here had similar issues and can give advice? Thanks!
It's the rear window seal, pretty common fault. Either put up with it or get it replaced :)

Can you not pump it full of silicone? Around the window under the mouldings?

Did you have this problem as well? What did you do? I went to Mits and got quoted about $120 for the seal kit but when he delved into it further he said he could only sell me the complete assembly (including glass). He is getting back to me on Monday to see if he can sell the parts separately through some other means.

Nah, mine just creaks when the car flexes going up/down gutters and kinda squeaks/rattles on the highway over tiny bumps. I'm just used to it, can't justify the price to replace it.
I think your dealer is talking **** though, other people have had the seal replaced without the window.

I have to get it done as it is driving me totally nuts! I will see what their reply is on Monday...

the whole unit (rear windscreen and seal) should be replaced under warranty. it's a known fault and the dealer shouldn't be trying to get out of doing it.
I had mine (TJ II) replaced (rear windscreen and seal) just after warranty ran out, but they still paid for half of it.
on the down side, it's started to squeak and rattle again, but no where near as bad.
cheers,

So it was a warranty item, not a Recall?
Bugger.

Thanks for the info Wook. I have a mate within Mitsu looking into it for me. :D

I've had mine done too (under warranty). Is the seal starting to flake? They put a TL window on mine, that was supposed to have been fixed, design wise (different seal to the TJ anyway)

The seal is flaking but im not overly worried about that. It will eventually wear off and there will be nothing to flake!

Mits quoted approx $120 to supply the seal and then went on to tell me that you have to buy the whole window assembly however i didnt get a price for that. I will keep you posted though.

Well, the dealer actually suggested to me to take it to a windscreen place to fit it as it would be "much cheaper". Now thats something you don't hear everyday! lol

Bugger! Looks like a new window then. Mine started squeaking at the start of an 8000km road trip! Drove me nuts, only stopped in the rain. A bit like the roof lining in Sigmas. They were all screwed too. Or the door handles on a '79-88 falcon. All buggered as well! Hope you can get a good deal.

from what I can deduce, the '04+ TL seal and windscreen are a different size to the 03 TL/TJ seal and windscreen. so if you have a car earlier than 04 you need to replace both screen and seal.
in terms of cost, it cost me $165 to have my rear screen and seal replaced, and Mitsu covered the rest. so I would say about $300.
cheers,

Mine is a 6/03 build which explains a lot.

Maybe thats saying get it refitted, but have it fitted the same way the later TL's are rather than the method originally used on the car? Makes sense to me.

Mines an 03 and every now and then it will start to squeak but doesn't do it all the time. I hate it too and so this thread is very helpful. Thanks Type40.:D

I was told that there is a field fix in place for this rattle so i inquired about that at my local Mits dealer...
It seems that the repair involves removing the seal and putting a tape of some sort between the window and bodywork. The quote was $90 to do and he said you will be able to see about 2mm of tape and thats all. I will book the car in within the fortnight and i will see how i go.
This is a hell of a lot cheaper than the $290 i was quoted for a glass and seal assy + $95 to fit...

the dealer originally tried this on mine... it worked, for about a month.
the squeak/rattle comes back and you actually notice it more because it's been gone.
the only real fix is to replace it, and even now, every now and then I get a squeak or rattle.

.wookSeconded - they tried the field fix twice on my rear screen - in amongst my fight over the pealing black paint on the rubber. In the long and the short of it I just found another dealer who replaced the item under warranty.
And as for the warranty/recall distinction, MMAL will only recall when the part could potentially effect the safety of the motor vehicle, whereby they could be negligent if they don't recall the fault. The rattling rear windscreen is just a fault with no impact on safety, and hence was a known warranty item - to which some dealers could be bothered to fix it, some not.

So you both think its worth spending the $$$ on a new assembly? It doesn't bother me paying the money to fix it properly so perhaps its the best option.

Mine's been fine since sept '05. Had the window changed under warranty. Worked a treat. Used to squeak like buggery (except when it rained - lubrication:) ).

Sorry to dig up an old thread. My Verada KJ2 Ei AWD is having the paint flaking issue on the rear windscreen seals as well. Can i use an oil based paint marker to paint over it?
