View Full Version : Am I insane...?

Ever since I got my Partners Elite on the road I have really fallen in love with the car. Since then I have been looking for another one, with limited success. They are all either too expensive lol seriously, too broken, or sitting in peoples front yards with grass slowly growing up around them
Today I had the dubious honour of working in the streets surrounding my house. I realised there are at least 10 1st-gen magnas on my block alone. A couple I was tempted to ask if they were interested in selling. There was even a pretty red Elante with no plates.
So, am I insane for looking for another first generation Magna? And am I looking in all the wrong places?

Can you fit a v6 into a 1st gen?
So, am I insane for looking for another first generation Magna?
Yes, awesome isnt it :)
in regards to fitting a V6 it can be done but the cost would be astronomical, and imo that results would be questionable, there are better routes for performance in a 1st gen.

You are not insane at all. The first gens are the most comfy cars i have ever driven. Grab the Elante if its in good nick. Or if its not, grab it, pull out seats, kit and whatever, find another 1st gen worth your money and then throw the kit and seats in it.
Ive driven a 2nd gen 3rd gen magna, an s13, R31, R32, R33 skylines, drove my mates 300zx, Prelude, commodores, WRX's, and I like my 1st gen magna more than any of them. Only thing i would really change on my car is to make it a little faster.
I have to admit, my mates 89 prelude was also a fun car to drive.
Ill probably get flamed big time for this post so FLAME ON!! :D

lol
So you would in all honesty take a first gen magna over an S13, R33 WRX or prelude if the keys were all there driveaway?:doubt:

nah not insane you just have the magna addiction. before owing my 1st gen i had never even looked sideways at one but now i wouldn't trade mine even if i was offered more than it's worth (which is not alot).
You know ur truely sick when the gf gets sick of you pointing out all the generations-slash models trim levels blah blah.
these go-carts n wheels (when i good nick all round) really grow on you. the only car for me that is on par or a bit better is the 89 3g honda prelude 4ws si thats i bought for 100 bucks and has all the electric options. but parts aren't cheap for them so the magna wins all-round.

Ive owned 1st Gens continuously since 1987 plus other cars simultaneously, but there is something about 1st Gens that makes them enjoyable to drive. I think it is the feeling of spaciousness and the fact that they are so stable on the road. They don't dart around with every wind gust or bump as some cars do.
When I wrote off my TN after 15 years and told my lady friend (who has been with me even longer) that it had gone to the wreckers, she said: "I liked that car. Go and get it back!" It had taken us to so many places all over Australia and never once let us down.
OK, they are 20 years old now and you have to expect some work to maintain them but they have very few rust or structural problems compared to other cars of the same age. With magnas, the bottoms of the doors are about the only weakness.
I say go for it. Keep an eye on eBay and the Trading Post because occasionally a good one will come up. It is worth the wait.

He wasnt reffering to performance?
Edit: I agree with the seats, best seats I've parked myself in.

pretty sure performance isnt the only thing better in these cars than a 1st gen, id definately say at the very least looks for one, more than likely more comfortable etc.

That's a lot of replies!
I'll try to summarise and encompass everything as best I can.
I have been looking on eBay, carpoint, The Trading Post, and the roads everywhere I go. They are as common as dirt to see driving around, just not for sale.
So far I have traveled as far as 75Km away to look at a potential, and been a little disappointed. Pickings are pretty slim around Shepparton unless you want an EA Falcon, and that's what I'm trying to swap out.
I would say if performance was what I was after I'd stick with the Falcon, but to be honest the humble auto TN leaves it in the dust.
Shockinglye enough, it's not the looks that made me consider it! Haha. It was actually the fuel economy, comfort, seating position, and the shockingly good handling!
The EA only gets driven by me for work now. My partner refuses to get in it ever again. I don't want to run her Magna into the ground using it for work. it's the only reason I still drive the EA at all.
I know where there is another Elite for sale. It happens to actually be the same Wrecker / 'dealership' the Elite came from. I wouldn't touch it though. It looks really ratty.
Did I mentiaon the ones lying dormant in peoples yards did not have any "for sale" signs etc. on them? It just happens to be one of those areas where use cars as yard decorations.
Neither was I?
Oh, so you must have been reffering to their sporty suspension to the soft comfortable ride in the family magna.
I see where you're going with this. :)

just coz the car is sitting in a yard with no plates and doing nothing, doesnt mean it mightnt be for sale!
some of the best bargains / finds / steals (not crime wise!) can be had from 'not for sale' cars.
just knock on the door and ask if they would be interested in letting you have (buy) the car - nine times out of 10, if its been sitting still for a while they dont really want it anymore anyway!
(this also works for starting to rust old holdens and fords as resto money making (after spending) projects.
id say your not insane as such... you like a particular car, and dont want anything else to replace it. realistically - its sensible :)
just dont pay too much for one - they are no 40yo ford / holden that could be an instant overnight money maker for you!
