Hi guys, i've been having some idle issues with my car, not sure what it might be. at first i was thinking it was a sticky throttle body (had this problem with my old TE).The problem is, when you start it up, the revs surge up as normal (up to around 1500), and instead of staying around 800-1000 rpm it drops down to 300-500. its not rough and doesn't stall, but its just not normal because as soon as you tap the throttle hard a couple times it sorts itself out and goes back to normal. and its only just after you start the car that it does this, and usually only after a hard run.
any thoughts?
Thanks :)
edit: this is actually for 2001 3.0L V6 camry

Sounds like the idle control isn't working as it should. Try unplug it as you start the car and see what happens, this will effect what you need to do. Try that and let me know.

Generally on the throttle body. There will be two electrical units on the throttle. The TPS which is located on the end of the throttle shaft, and the idle control which will be larger and usually not black like a TPS.
nah just get a grounding kit.

To answer the OP, have you tried cleaning the throttle body yet?

Yeah it should either idle okay or be the same, that will pin point the idle control as the problem.

Up the idle speed, have you recently touched anything or had a service? My car was very rough at idle and I didnt even notice how low it was idle'ing at. The mechanics didn't set it properly when it left the workshop! Was not pleased at all as I had RACV come out and turn the idle switch. It was on 300-500 and struggling to stay alive thus causing a more nasty rough idle especially when stopped at the lights etc. Was adjusted and havent had a problem either, nasty rough idle has gone to smooth so I suggest trying to adjust higher.
On 2nd gens its easy as, not sure about 3rd's but someone can tell you where it is and how to do it. Otherwise your ISC or TPS or ECU could be faulty.
Hope this helps!
p.s dont adjust too high as it consumes more fuel, stick to what it says it should be at.

Adjusting it high can also lead to transmission overheating, as the engine sits closer to the stall RPM.

Thats why you must look at your cars booklet or the plaque on the engine for the correct rpm.
But we should all know that, as it goes for almost all things on a vehicle.
