Hey ppl, was driving my magna home from school today n as i entered my street this really creepy noise started. Now it was liek a squeaking sound but its a little throaty so im guessing its my warped disc as my brakes have been squeaking for a while when u apply them.

Can anyone rectify this for me?

If i do need new brakes and discs for a 98 Tf Magna, what sort of cost am i looking at?

-cheers

Just took it for another spin around the block to see if the noise would occur again and it didnt. This has got me confused now, the car both times was at operating temperature and had been driven for say 20 mins prior and been drivin calmly.

Could it possibly be a belt that was playing up? Or do my brakes probably have to get hotter for the disc to make that wonky sound?

which is it
a squeak?
a squeal?
a grind?
a metal to metal rub?
a cyclic squeak?

are you using stock rotors, stock pads, stock calipers?

Magna's are very squeak to begin with, it doesn't mean it is warped.

prehaps the easy thing you could do is check how much pad you have left, you may be able to peek through the caliper gaps to see this.

If there's at least 5mm of pad, your pads should be fine, but it could be glazed over, causing squeal, but it should be constant as soon as you apply braking pressure.

cyclic squeak points to slightly warped rotors or poor caliper guide bolt.

does it squeal cold or hot or both?

I have cold squeal, but not hot.

most of these problems needs you to pull apart the caliper and pads in order to check properly. so if you have time and the knowledge of brake system, you could pull it apart and examine the bits and pieces for obvious damages or scratches. But if you're unsure of the brake system, don't attempt it as you could be left with no brakes, and that could be dangerous!

Had a TE when they first came out in '96 and it squealed like a bastard. Turned out to be the handbrake, which is a drum brake type arrangement, not releasing the shoe all the way. Dealer had alot of grief trying to sort it out. Mitsu eventually came out with a mod. to fix it. We even had a Japanese guy at the dealership asking how the car was( ahh, quiet now, sank you) 8)
