Hey guys my fuse for the tail (which is used for the parkers, dash and clock as well) keeps dying. Now the fuse has melted onto the connectors.
I replaced the fuse again and the connectors now don't pick up anything. I'm guessing some plastic has burnt onto them.
Will i be needing a whole new fuse box or am i able to just replace those connectors?
And i don't know what keeps setting the fuse off. It didn't used to happen before i did the engine swap. I know kb is having a similar problem with his vr-4 too. Weird

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks :)

Check the current draw. Start from the fuse and work your way down current until you find the problem. Another way to do it is to turn everything off that the fuse runs (take globes out of lights, unplug clock) and test 1 at a time until something reads high current.

Do you have a clamp meter, they are very handy for this sort of thing.

You should also be able to remove the pins from the fuse box and replace them. It is tricky but saves getting a whole new fuse box.

Firstly, most clamp meters are AC.

If you are blowing fuses, you have something taking too much power (obviously). You may have a pinched wire, or someone has decided to use this wire (during your engine conversion) to power something else. That would be my bet.

thanks for the input
yep it's the HID's that are drawing more power so i upgraded from a 10A fuse to a 20A because the 10A one was busting
but this was all good before the engine conversion and i used the HID's for 2 months without a problem
after the engine swap the fuse started blowing
btw, the air con and fan aren't hooked up yet...

hmm tried to post this before but site went down...

And people, don't just replace fuses when they blow. (especially never replace a fuse with a higher rated fuse)

Fuses are there to protect the wiring. If your fuses are blowing they are blowing for a reason. Find out the root cause, usually a short or excessive load on the wire.

if you have been doing any work on the electronics on your car ensure your ground is d/c.

You may want to redo your wiring or check the size of it to ensure it can handle double the load it was previously fused for.

Otherwise if it cant handle 20 amps and the fuse can the fuse isnt going to blow, the wire is (= fire)

:stoopid: and i've had it happen its not nice seeing flames and smoke coming out of your dash

Well, thats your problem then.

HID ballasts can pull an easy 35A each on startup, especially on a hot restrike and without the engine running. As the bulbs age they pull more on startup as well - aftermarket ballasts are notorious for being power hogs (poor design and efficiency)

Do it properly, put in a relay and a decent wiring harness - your ballasts will last a bit longer too. Maybe...

The site screws up every time you try and use html in a reply for some reason.

Hey dimi... check that bulb that keeps coming loose in the boot... if it shorts it will blow the fuse every time!

thanks tim and everyone for the input - at least i've got a better idea at what could be the cause now

dan i think you could be right!
the bulb on the garnish keeps popping out randomly and turns on and off
but heath could be right too because it seems to happen when the car "starts"
like this morning for example i turned it on and turned the headlights on just to check and BOOM no dash lights, rear tails or fogs.

i'm taking it on wednesday to the my sparkie
just hope he can replace the connectors where the fuse sits because plastic melted onto them and now they don't wanna know about a new fuse

if it happened when you turned your headlights on - you have pretty much found your fault.

they are drawing too much current.

did you upgrade the harness wiring to a thicker guage when you put the HIDs in?

no i didn't i just upped the fuse
but the thing is, when i installed them a few months ago they worked flawlessly without blasting any fuses or causing any problems
but after the new engine and wiring was done it's blowing that fuse every few days :doubt:
