ahhhh I've done the one under the auto shifter, its really easy
ummm take the centre piece console out (w/ cupholders etc) it just unclips out
and now i cant remember if you need to take the main centre console out which requires you to unbolt four bolts or if you can just place your hand under the shifter and the bit that sticks out underneath is the bulb and you just twist it a certain way and it falls out
pretty easy
dunno if this helps im pretty useless at writing instructions!

Dunno about 3rd gens, but for the 2nd gens I have yet to find an LED replacement for any console lights. They are different from anything I have seen listed on any lighting site (similar to T5, but with a non-wedge base, using exposed wire leads...)

i got my led's from ebay. Have only done it recently so i need to update my avatar got sick of the bulb covers fading from heat. i did it for all lights cept factory instrument cluster. pull out dash vent and you will see the two bulbs you need to replace. I am unsure of the bulb type in your cars trans indicator, but i converted mine to a strip of leds from the illuminus strips it came out with. i did a thread on this a while back but onlyused bulbs then

I was wondering that too. I bought a new air-con unit and it rocked up today, but I thought I'd better ask before I break something lol
I attached a pic, where the red arrows are pointing, are they the lights? How do I actually remove them? I had a bit of a fiddle but couldn't get them out.

I recently replaced my main instrument cluster lights with red LEDs (bought off eBay from neogaugeleds, 4 x T10 size) and will post an illustrated guide ASAP. They work pretty well.
Meanwhile, I want to change the lights behind the ventilation controls (1998 Magna TF) and gear lever to red as well - but I'm not sure if the same LEDs (T10) are plug-compatible. The supplier doesn't know either.
Can anyone advise so I don't have to pull things apart to find out?
(Shhhayne, do you remember if the gear shift light socket was T5 or T10 or whatever?)

heres an idea what it loks like in all red..i put led strips in my gear lever..4sp tippy...big job..have to pull every thing apart...same for centre stack...every thing has to come out..very involved ,but worth the effort..sorry for the fuzziness ,but you get the idea

You need to buy the really flat ones as there isnt much room under there, because of the sliding mechanism of the gear lever and the sideways movement of the lever. You have to be prepared to cut and remove the existing light stips and glue the leds in ,i put 2 x 10cm ones in and it worked well,

Good to know!
I need to make the rest of the lights in the car bright like my luminous dash.
Cheers bud!

i used two 12cm led strips and stuck it (self adhesive) to the underside of the surround. All tippys are not the same. earlier ones had a T10 bulb type and others had illumanative flat strips so you have to be careful when removing.

the ones behind the heater are t5 ,only single ones will fit too..trip display are t10...dont get ones with too many leds for the trip display as they will be too bright and all you see is the circuit board showing through

Summary of all light/lamp/bulb positions for the dash/console (at least valid for my TF):
The main instrument cluster requires 4 x T10. These are easy to change - just remove the entire unit.
The "tripmeter" (Set Speed warning indicator in my TF) uses a single T10. A bright red multi-way LED looks superb. Easy to do, just remove the centre vents (well, there is the horrible "under the dashboard" cable to deal with here) and take out the tripmeter module.
The ventilation control unit requires 2 x T5. It has a short depth for bulbs, the NeoGuage LED is too long - I just taped the connectors in place since they can't twist back. The resulting lighting is VERY bright with "hot spots" where the LEDs are (much brighter than the main instrument dials). Once the centre vents are removed, this can be done without removing the whole assembly - it's a bit fiddly, but it's not much easier with the unit pulled out anyway.
The lighter socket and ashtray each require a T5. Since the lighter socket bulb position is on the left side, the ring illuminates unevenly with my red LED (dim on the right). Easy to replace with the ashtray module pulled out.
The gear lights use a single T10. They really require a bright white bulb to illuminate properly; I put in a red multi-facet LED, which lights up the little red position indicators ok, but not the gear symbols. An LED strip might be best for this. You have to remove the surrounding dash panels for access, but the gear assembly can stay in place.
Photo "how-to" coming sometime soon...

I replaced my console lights with LEDs that fit in fine. The brand is Monza - if you search eBay for "Monza T5 Dash LED light" you'll find them. Alternatively, I'm sure I've seen the Monza brand at Autobarn before. They aren't terribly bright (could be a good or a bad thing), but at least they fit perfectly.
The "tripmeter" (Set Speed warning indicator in my TF) uses a single T10.
My series 1 TJ VR-X has four T10 bulbs. Either that or I didn't look properly. Hopefully I'm right, I only ordered two so I had to order two more  Anyway, my car's at the mechanics so I can't double check atm. Will post back when I change them over.

There was a link here somewhere giving instructions on how to do this. Any info?
I cant find it :(
Kinda afraid that without a good instruction set, ill screw up my console, end up with extra screws and annoying rattles when driving.
Anybody know where it is?

There's a link to it in the Car Audio section. There's not many screws to undo - the cupholder/gearshift surround is only held in with clips, as is the ashtray surround. Once you undo the aircon thingamajiggy, the speed alert surround/top vents simply pop out as well.
Oh, and I changed my TJ S1's speed alert lights today, it's three T10 bulbs.

im finding it very hard to get the light on the left hand side of the aircon unit out any tips
sorry for bringing up an old thread but my battery is disscinnected and i need an answer
it seems to be in further than the one on the right

Also don't use dome type, you'll see a big round dot in the middle of your display. I have ordered some inverted to fix that....

Sorry for thread mine, its not worth opening a new thread for my question.
Q:What type of led's fit in the rear window defroster/ AC buttons on a non-climate control 3rd gen? I keep reading that T5's go in the aircon, but I think this might be the bulbs for the round knob things, not the 2 little buttons...

@BlackBull
there has been a recent thread explaining how to pull-apart the Climate Control unit, and access the bulbs inside.... they are very small and unusual buggers, I know there are 2 smaller and 2 a bit larger. They twist into the printed circuit much like dash cluster bulbs, but are much smaller. The actual bulb is integrated with the holder, you can't pop a bulb out. As spares they are in the order of $15-$25 from memory of the other threads.
I think they are either T1 or T2 or T3 size, but unless I get a wrecker climate unit, or pull may car apart (yet again) I can't be sure - I have one blown behind the On/out temp/etc buttons. Sorry, at work at the moment, and I can't recall who did the recent "How to" thread, but it was an excellent effort with good pics etc
Search of 'Climate Control' should find the thread.
