View Full Version : Why don't Tj Magna wagons have a split fold rear seat and what is "Tri Safe"?

Just looking at a TJ wagon for the wife to drive and noticed that the rear seat does not fold down 60/40 style like many other wagons, so if you have to carry a long object which requires the rear wagon seat to be fold down the car essentially becomes a '2 Seater'
In many wagons if the object is long but not too wide you can still seat 2 kids in the back with the 40% side fold down. I looked in an old TJ brochure and it mentioned "Tri safe" as a safety feature in the wagons.

fixed Passes chainsaw.... Trisafe is so in the event of a smash the seat doesnt buckle upon impact if large or heavy things lay behind the rear seat.

My TH hasn't got a split seat either, it, more than workable and I do use the whole load area at least 3/4 days a week. But I don't have car seats......

The rationale Mutsu spouted at time of the release of the 3rd gen wagon for not having split rear seat was that the one-piecer was more rigid in the event of an accident and was therefore able to support a lap/sash mid mount belt, where a split backrest wouldn't (they said). The fact that people like Subaru and Volvo had worked out how to have a split backrest with a middle lap/sash belt seemed to escaped Mitsu's notice....

The 1997 VT Commodore wagon had the 60/40 split seat with the over shoulder centre lap sash on the 60% seat back. I own one a VT that is, it also has oval shaped internals in the engine and gearbox, Holden said I was mistaken , but you can feel it when you drive it:D It also has a gearbox which is about as good at making calculations as I was at high school....maths was my worst subject:badgrin: But the Vt is very tough, it feels like it would never actually break no matter how much up and down movement occurs within parts which engineers intended to go round and round instead.

It could be worse, by the time they got to the VT the guy machining the engine parts had worked out how to shave the corners and manufacture the oval shaped internal moving parts so Holden could launch the "more refined VT". That same guy went through his apprenticeship making oblong pieces for the VN and VP blissfully unaware they ran so rough it was actually causing drivers to lose bladder control without realising lol . As for your transmission, if it hasn't detached itself from the car and engine then you got a good one. Look on the bright side, it's not a Camira.

I owned a 1.6 Camira once, it was so slow that one day passing an old man and his wife up a slow hill at 60 kph in a 110 zone it simply ran out of power and sat next to him after a little while the old couple started looking over at me thinking I was either fooling around or on drugs then I had to pull back behind them, he then accelerated away from me  His car 1976 automatic Toyota corona lol

Actually the Vt isn't too bad power wise it goes well even on LPG, it's just the lack of drive train refinement ie silly gearbox and noisy engine at high rpm, the ecotec can actually make good power with minor mods and great power with a high psi supercharger, for an old tech engine they are not bad.

my 5c hyundai and my 10c astra have 60/40 seats in them

shame on mitsu, no idea.... proably saved $10k on engineering there so they thought it'd pass

purpose of wagon defeated if to carry long loads it's reduced to a 2 seater

if i were looking at one i'd either get another model wagon (im sure camry has a split fold) or a UTE

my 05 still has 1 piece rear seat. to think about it, my dads always has subi wagons, since 1980, all them had the split 60/40 year seat with center lapsash ;-)

i remember somebody offering me a camira with 1000 bucks worth of new parts he just put in for 50 bucks, i turned him down still. he came back and said i could have it for free about a month later, i still turned him down.

What if he offers you $1000 to take it? :P No make that $2000:D

In burnt oil alone you'd waste $2000 within a matter of months. I had a JB (1981) Camira for my first car. It was a brief relationship. It was the rare SL/E Version (rare because it was still running) with 5 speed manual and Air conditioning. Now while the 5-speed seemed a little more conventional that the 4-speed of the inferior SL models, Holden neglected to set the gear ratios at anything remotely resembling usable range. If you tried to use 5th gear at 90-100kp/h to drop the revs and lower the din of the engine screaming through the poorly sealed doors the car would respond by not only dropping revs but also dropping speed. Judging from my experience 5th gear would have come in handy at about 140kp/h and EVERYBODY knows that Camira's don't go that quick. Mine hit 120 and the steering would shake so badly the keys would fall out of the ignition. The Air Con was another interesting addition. If you activated it in 4th or 5th gear on a freeway it was as if someone had thrown out an anchor, you had to maintain between 3000 and 4000 RPM just to keep it and the engine running in unison......ah I miss that car.

i had a 88 lancer sedan, it had 60/40 split/folt, and an arm rest. It was a GLX. I had 8 people in that car one night driving through Newcastle. Apparently, the boot is comfy.

Mits sadly have always been lacking in thought, what is with that crap ski port in the sedans?

As for the back seat, that is the only thing that stopped us from buying a magna wagon, we have kids and the split fold is essential

man this has been annoying me for so long. i hate it how it doesnt split, i am always carrying longstuff with 3 people, they sit on the floor.:doubt: .
When i get some spare time i was looking at modding it to split. i had a quick look the other day, its gonna be a huge mission. dont think its gonna happen, alot of metal cutting etc.
Has anyone else looked at this mod?

The reason for the one piece seat back was safety. Around the time of its development there had a been a couple of accidents where people were injured by heavy items in the rear of vehicles going through the rear seat. Mitsi won a safety design award for the Tri-safe seat design. Its all swings and round abouts. What you gain in safety you lose in convienience (60/40) You cant please everyone.

Agreed, a nice looking wagon, couldn't be bothered listening to the designers crap on about it, but aside from having the most irritating website to advertise it, the car looks great. Reminds me of a Euro wagon, can't put my finger on exactly what, maybe an Audi? Sorry Schnell, can't agree with you lol gotta give Holden credit for that one.
