1> Download the Service Manual CD (hint: Search).
2> Go and buy an Aeropro adaptor from Autobahn (If you bought an Alpine, Pioneer, Sony, etc).
3> Plug-in and Prey.

Get the Aeropro harness like suggested and pray haha...when I did with with the adapter in our TR, the audio plugs were in different places, so what you need to do is work out what wire is what from the car loom, and whats what on the harness, and move the pins on the harness to the right places. Thats only if it doesn't work, in the case of a 3rd gen, I don't see why it wouldn't as all the cars have front and rear speakers unlike the 2nd gens which have varying speaker quantities depending on the model.

With the harness, you need two, Autobarn are $15 or $20 each, can't remember, think it varies. One will go from the loom on your car to a 4 pin and a 8 pin plug, and the other will go from the 4 + 8 pin plugs to the headunit connection. Otherwise, you have to strip the wires on the factory loom, match them up one by one then crimp, solder and cover. Its up to you what you want to do.

the only issue you might have with the aepro connectors, is the arial prolly wont go down when you flick from tuner to cd

they got it pretty spoton with the tl/kl - its just plug and play (no need to pray here thankfully!)

the hardest part of the whole procedure will be to take the dash apart to get at the stereo - but even that is easy in a tl / kl.

pics when done!!!

What info are you specifically after? How to remove the old headunit, the wiring, or...?

Removing it, this is a guide for a TJ with climate control by Bain I believe, http://members.optusnet.com.au/miltonf/car/mitsu/console/stereoremoval.htm

With wiring, you can get do what the other guys have said, or if you can solder, and your new headunit came with it's own wiring harness wire raw wires sticking out, you can get one that plugs into your car, and then join the wires up together. Check JB Hi-Fi if you you have one near by, I saw the one I needed back when I was installing mine for $10 at JB, and I had to get it ordered in, and run around all over the place to get it from autobarn for $15. That's a regular cheeseburger meal, I'll never see!

remove your coin tray / ashtray at the armrest - pull it up.

remove the center console (put the car in Drive to get the panel arount the auto if applicable) by pulling the console up from where the coin tray used to be.

to remove the dash thingy - pull the lower tray out - it litterally just pulls towards the back of the car, and it will pop out :)

the next part is held in with two screws which where hidden under the facia from the bit you just pulled out.
undo them

start from the bottom and pryse the panel out - might take a little force but it does come out.

remember to undo all the plugs before you pull the whole face off too far.. the looms stretch a little.. but not too far.

headunit is held in by a bracket - should be easy enough to pull it apart from there.
putting it back together is a reverse.

(someone will correct me if im wrong in the pulling of the facia panels apart? pretty sure thats how i did mine yesturday to power up the rada headunit to get the cds i left in the stacker out..

really quite easy - esp if i can do it!

Thanks so much man. I'm pulling my Ei apart this weekend :) Did you stick a single DIN unit in? Did you find a DIN pocket anywhere?

when i did mine - i put a single DIN alpine cdr 4100r in the top mounting part, and a alpine dva5210 dvd thingy in the lower part.
so i didnt need to get a din pocket thing for mine.

the good thing about the maggy / rada setup, is that its easy enough to put two single DIN units in using the standard double DIN bracket.

kondi - make sure you do post pics! its a requirement of any mod on this site isnt it?! lol

in the rear parcel shelf i assume?

if they are anything like clarions - the basket might be too 'wide' to fit.
easy fix

(disclaimer - im TOLD)
get some pliers (spelling?) and GENTLY prise the opening for the speakers wider from inside the boot.
dont need to do it much - my clarions only needed an extra 5mm total to fit all the way around...
some speakers do fit right in though without the headache.

but be careful - the parcel shelf is a structural part of the car - it is NOT RECOMENDED (ie legal) to cut/make holes in it

Thanks for the tips, back speakers have been put in now. Does anyone know how the parcel shelf works in regards to putting in a subwoofer?

there should be a 10inch diam. plastic circle cover thing on the passengers side of the parcel shelf - apparently thats where the factory 10inchers would sit?
(my rada doesnt have it un/fort - and im not interested in using a factory location for a Sub.)

just put one in a box in the boot with an amp - much easier IMO :)

Hey doddski. Got my harnesses and just about to put my new HU in the KL Ei. Did the power aerial still work with the harnesses for you? Also, on the back of the original Double DIN head unit, there was another lead sticking into the back/left (on the right when you are looking at it while pulling it out of the dash) of the lower part of the Unit. Do you know what that connector is/does? Do we need it?

Cheers,

yeah my ariel still works with the connectors
but when the headunit is on - the ariel is fully extended at all times on mine.
so when i change from radio to cd stacker / dvd player, the ariel stays extended all the time - doesnt retract as it does with the standard headunit (when you go to play cds, the ariel drops back away nice and neatly)

IIRC - the small plug that has about 4wires out of it, is the ariel power?
im not 100% sure tho.
its the wider of the two plugs / one with the most wires, that carries your power / constant / acc / speaker wires i believe.

all i know really, is that it seems i have the amp remote line connected to my ariel trigger line! lol
which is ok really... coz i dont have an amp in my car as yet

Oh god :bowrofl:

Well, seems like it'll be forgiving. I'll troubleshoot after I finish :)

but thats mine - i couldnt get the exactly correct adapted to go into the back of my alpine headunit - had to get one from a similar and newer alpine headunit.

it would just be a matter of swapping the wires over between the plugs when you find out if you get the same issue - wouldnt be too hard - just two wires to swap really..
i just cbf doing it! lol

Got mine in on the weekend and works great. Antenna works like it should between Radio/CD. Got a Single DIN pocket yesterday from IMLACHS's and will see if that works alright.
