Hi all

Family vacation to Batemans Bay this week was a diaster. Weather sucked and the rada let me down big time! The trip down to BB was uneventful. However, on thursday, the box started slipping in all gears and it would then go into limp mode. No difference in next morning when it was cold - still slipping. Out of sheer luck, I was talking to the NRMA on the phone with the engine idling (NRMA quoted $1280 to tow it back to Sydney). I put it into gear and it slowly pick up drive after a long delay. Accelerating, noted it stopped slipping and first to second change normal, but second to third happened with a massive flare and forth normal

Managed to get back to sydney this way. Oil is burnt. Tranny specialist read the codes and said that first, second and forth gear solenoids not synchronised which suggest slipping.

Its currently driving but with those symptoms. It has slipped again in Sydney, but by letting it idle in Park, it seems to cure it (does make a diff if box is hot or cold).

Anyway some advice please:

I have two options -

1) reconditioning mine is going to cost $1700 or so:
2) or I could go the second hand route. Mine is a 4 speed tiptronic. Would the later Series 2 TJ 4sp tiptronic box be the same as mine? What box would I need to get for it?

Anybody what Mitsu exhange units are worth? Anybody have a suitable box?

Your advice would be appreciated.

Ah crap. What a bummer. My thoughts:
- if it hasn't already been done, flush the trans fliud, change the trans filter, reset the trans control unit, "relearn" the unit. Any decent auto trans specialist can do all this. be sure to use Mits trans fluid. There is a long shot that this may fix it all. It's worth the few hundred bucks to find out and maybe save yourself thousands
- if this fails then I would take whichever is the cheapest option of exchanging for a Mits supplied rebuild box OR having your rebuilt. There is honestly not much to choose in qulaity between the two I had both a Mits and non-Mits rebuild on my TP anf the only real diff I noticed was in damage to my hip pocket lol

Anybody know, would the TL/TW 4sp tiptronic be the same unit as my TJ S1 4spd tippy?

Sorrry to hear that. I got stranded 40 kms from Adelaide on a trip in my old KS where the
TCU got fried. Not a good experience. With the question regarding transmissions, since
yours is a verada, why not go for the 5 speed tippy, even better, try sourcing a second
hand unit from any of the AWDs. They are a stronger unit than the standard 5 speed tippy
due to the extra strain caused by AWD traction (they are from the EVO 6/7 GTAs), although
you will need to change the dash cluster as well.

The TL/W was 5 speed.

TL/TW magnas had 4 spd
TL/TW AWD/VR/VRX had 5 spd
KL/KW had 5 spd

(NRMA quoted $1280 to tow it back to Sydney). If you ever get stuck in that situation again, find a friend with a 4wd and go and hire a car trailer to retrieve the car. It would be about $400 bucks including fuel and the trailer.

Really? How scuzzy is that? I thought that by the time the last 3rd gen was around they would have moved the 5 speed to all models. Scuzzy.
