when you undid the sump plug how much oil went into the catch can

nearly every motor has at least 4 litres if not more with a filter
the TR/TS V6 is 4 litres without filter and 4.3 with filter

i let it drain for 45 mins, and around 4 litres came out, i kno that bcos i put the old oil in an old conatainer which was 4litres full.

well the oil must still be draining down from the top of the motor
and sitting on the dipstick

come back to it

oil should be 4 litres going in to the motor for sure

the manual gearbox is 2 litres

Dont forget once you start it and it gets pumped around everywhere and in the filter, it should drop a bit. Also, since you have just filled up the oil, you will need to wipe the dipstick clean before you get a reading again.

Oh, sometimes I find it hard too, because I think just from rubbing against the dipstick tubing, sometimes it will get oil up the dipstick. As I use nice gold synthetic oil, although probably the same for any oil, new oil is very clear, and kinda hard to tell the oil level. So mayeb it just looks like its high???

Its 4.3L of oil for the 3.0L engine and 4.7L of oil for the 3.5L (including filter)

Be very careful you didnt drain your transmission instead, and then just added 2.5L to the engine oil........ lol

Very, very valid point, however on the TF isnt the plug for the tranny behind the plastic guard near the LHF tyre? Youd have to be a fair idiot to think that it was your sump plug, but you never know.

What about the diff plug? Do they have a seperate one?

Sorry I was thinking Auto, but his profile states Manual, in which case I have no clue, never serviced one.

Ahh so was i.... :P

Then its a fair possibility he could've drained it without realising.

Just looking in my Gregorys (haynes doesnt have a pic) and the plug is near the bottom kinda to the left of the Y piece of the exhaust (proper name?) and the front engine mount, I guess if one were not being careful you could mistake this for the sump plug.

funny that, i had similar problems but opposite, i fill up with Mobil 1 and with it being so clear, its hard to see it on the dipstick as mention before but the first time i did my own oil change to the TL, i put in the approx. the usual amount of oil and left a bit in the 5L bottle, checked the drip stick and found nothing!!!not a drop... eventually i found some oil (not much) after like 5 mins of pondering then i decided to run the engine a bit to get the full amount cycled through the engine. thats when it went up to full on the dip stick... strange engines...

Mines a 24mm bolt on the side of the big black oil sump pretty hard to mistake it... but easy to thread it if u don't use a 24mm socket... and especially if the last bastard who owned it got the ****en Hulk to tighten it.... lol

been there done that, but it was Kmart Tyre & Auto that had mine very tight. i nearly threaded mine...so after that event, i went out to get the right size socket no issues after.

LOL.... i had to reshape the bolt with a chisel and hammer to be able to undo it....:bowrofl:

guess it always comes down to always use the right tool for the job. what were you using to undo it.

yeah its all done now, just took a while to find its way to the bottom, plus being a very clear oil it was hard to tell, i put 4 ltrs in yesterday was in a rush to go out.

I'm about to check it again and put some more in.

Also

How worth while is it top replace the gearbox oil. (Car is Manual).
To make my new short shift kit extra sexy smooth.

Depends how many K's the oil has done, the recommendation for my second gen is 40,000Kms, but I change it around half that.
If in doubt...drain it out.(especially if you do it yourself saving labour costs)
If the oil is in good condition it won't make much if any difference to the smoothness by changing it.

Yeah i kno i've done around 16,000 in it so far (total 138XXX) just a thought i'm trying to clean the car to look respectable

I change all my oil myself. Engine every 5-7.5k, with fully syn oil. Gearbox, about 20k or so. Engine oil is a fraction under 5l (which is a shame, always a little bit of wasted oil). Manual gearbox is about 2.5L off the top of my head.

Big difference when I first changed gearbox oil, gear changes were much more smooth, and gearbox felt more solid.

Yeah i think i will be doing that. Question is tho (the workshop manual prob covers this somewhere) where to pour the new Oil in, I remember seeing the Bolt under the box when i was doing the oil, but never saw anywhere to refill it??

Manual says it quite nice. But, to drain, is the bolt closer to the engine. To fill, is the higher bolt, below the airbox area.

I did a manual gearboc gearchange, but in my old laser. It was really low mileage and the box was in good shape, and althoguh I have no idea when it was last changed, dunno if they do it as part of the regular ford servicing, but I did notice a reasonable difference. However I think was only because I added a Nulon additive for manual tranmsissions which many people have raved about. I would use this again for sure. I think its called G20 or something.

Speaking of oil changes i did mine today as it was due, didnt think car would feel any different but it feels alot smoother and more responsive, changed from 20w-40 to 10w-50.

the 10w-50 is a thinner oil, hence you'll feel the improvements, i found magna engine love thinner oil compared to the traditional 20w-50 that most places use.

Only when cold. At 100deg C, its actually the same viscosity.
