I got sick of not having any audio in my car for the last 3 months so i walked into the closest car audio store i was near ( was renewing my licence at the time ) and asked if they had any good decks that had rear USB. He said the only one at the moment was the Alpine 9886 but it was 500. As i was about to walk out, he said "I can sell it to you for $350" and i was like O.O !! ripped out my keycard and bought that ****.

I was going to make some pods for my response splits out of fiberglass but i decided on not to because id end up stuffing up. I went to supercheap and bought some pods but they were to shallow so i made some spaces for them. I know it doesn't look very nice but it saves me from cutting a hole into the metal of the doors. If someone can tell me where i can buy some good pods that are alteast 8cm deep let me know. The tweeters were easy to install only needed a hole saw and some screws.

Door trims needs to be finished.

My brother bolted my 250W sony xplod amp with the cross overs onto some wood then chucked it under the seat.

Finally, after screwing around all day to get the bloody seat back in, I installed the deck, hooked up my 40gb laptop drive and turned it on. It gave me USB error so deleted the partition and created a 32gb fat32 partition and left the other space unallocated. Put some music on it and it worked fine.

Im not to fust about loosing 8gb 32gb is way more than enough for MP3's. It reads the hard drive very fast. From when you turn the deck on, it takes like 1.5 seconds to play your mp3's

Something i would have LOVED, is if you could change the color. Green would have been nice or even purple.

The quality of this thing is fan ****ing tastic! I love it. its so easy to navigate through too. Just click the volume button to get to what you need and thats it.

http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/316/30837454du3.jpg

You dont have to navigate through a thousand of bloody menu's to get to the fader or turn the bass up or down. Its such an awesome retro style deck with new stuff.

It even has seperate buttons to go through your folders.

One thing though, it doesn't have a proper EQ built in but even without it, it sounds amazing. The sound quality is great! Im going to buy the imprint EQ for it ASAP.

Sorry for the long post. I know im going to get **** because of the pods haha.

It's probably because their new range is due out within the next few weeks, it's a good time to buy car audio at the moment, everyone will be clearing old stock.

Will look great once you finnish the pods off...

Whats powering the HDD, have you got it hard wired? or the head unit powering it?

Yeah its running straight of the deck no separate power lead. I have another usb cable on my pc so the one thats on the deck now never has to be removed.

I was ( and still am ) little worried that the hdd is going to draw to much current from the USB port and damage it but i asked the guy at Alberts, and he said it would be fine because he is using a hdd too.

Still, id like to see some data sheets to see how much current it can provide.

Next thing to do is get am amp to power my subs. That can wait though. Surprisingly the old type S in the dash sound like mini sub woofers.

Hey guys, just noticed my amp gets realy hot like, hold your hand for a few seconds and its boiling. Is the grounding point i done for it in a good spot ? or its crap ?

Should be ok, those Sony amps do get hot though.

A few cable ties will tidy up the wiring a little. :D

What did the pods cost you at supercheap? I;m looking for a set that i can mod to fit around the door pockets.

The pods were around the $50 mark but my mate bought them for me with his 25% discount. The pockets actually un screw from the trim so you can relocate them if you want.

if you are just going to put these pods on without spacers, you will have a problem with part of the trim that bulges out.

http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/7534/27063386lc3tt8.jpg

The first spacer has been cut so it can get passed the bulge of the trim but if it didnt have the bulge i still would have had to make spacers for the magnets.

better spacers should fix this problem though.

you can create fat32 partitions greater than 32gb.

i use fdisk and mkfs.vfat in linux to create my parititons.

Cool thanks. I might have to do that if i start running out of space.

Man, if you want to make it slightly better looking, paint those spacers. or carpet them to give it the 'I actually care about what my spacers look like' look rather than the 'hey check out my end-grain bro' look.

:)

Top job otherwise.

Actually, your doors are quite angular... I'd recommend a triangular prism as a speaker mount, make it out of mdf/plywood, have it bolted to the trim and carpetted. Would look great with a square grille on it.

Damn man the rectangle box is actually a good idea. Might make some and see how it goes.

As for the 'hey check out my end-grain bro' lol I peeled off the old trim from the pockets and wrapped it around the spacers. I was really happy with them and then my bro goes "THAT LOOKS ****ING ****" I got put off and ripped them off and left the wood

Thanks for the compliments guys :)

Next up is to get my doof doof going. Im gonna make a custom box that slides in between the struts but so i can still take the spare tire out with ease.

My mate's Vitara has holes cut in it's interior metal to fit rear 6 inch speakers... He got it like that so it passed RWC with it. Do the rectangle box thing though man, that would be pimp.

Hey guys just an update on my install. I was going to make a complete new box from scratch but then i thought i might modify my old box instead.

http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/4125/52718795it1.th.jpg (http://img352.imageshack.us/my.php?image=52718795it1.jpg)

What i did, is cut 4cm of each side, relocated the subs at the back of the box, and used some spare bits of MDF to cover the old holes up.

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/7384/61043935ec6.th.jpg (http://img168.imageshack.us/my.php?image=61043935ec6.jpg)

http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/5873/95243934ry5.th.jpg (http://img182.imageshack.us/my.php?image=95243934ry5.jpg)

The reason I did this is because the box in its original form wouldnt fit inbetween the struts. Also, with the speakers at the back of the box, the slope that was at the front, is pretty much exact angle that my rear seat is

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/92/90660194yl1.th.jpg (http://img168.imageshack.us/my.php?image=90660194yl1.jpg)

Im going to take the seat out and bolt the box from behind so it will never be able to move. Im also planning to get a long sheet of MDF so i can bolt it onto the face of the box ( but adding holes for the subs ) and then covering it in black carpet so when its all done, it looks like its part of the boot. :D

I have almost finished my boot install. Im thinking of recarpeting the thin peice of MDF that is on the subwoofer box face because you can see the mdf OR just get some nice grills that will cover it up :)

Boot carpet needs to be fixed up and also needs some MDF under it :D

OH yeah how could i forget :D

I know im probably gonna get flamed for this, but the amp i bought was a Sony Xplod xm - 1S for $350. I bought it because it was a perfect fit for where i wanted to, has good reviews and can provide 250WRMS x 2 ch @ 2ohm :D

partition magic can make larger than 32gb fat32 partitions

also the usb should be rated to 500ma (USB standard)
