Hi everyone,

I got TJ advance 01 model, with nearly 200,000 on the clock. At the moment its 4 speed auto (non tiptronic). Gearbox is making non pleasant noises lately, so I think its time to change it. PLEASE GUYS DON’T advise to service it I’ve done that few times, makes no difference.

Basically what I want is to put 5 speed auto (tiptronic) from a TJ vrx for example. My good mate of mine smashed his TJ vrx and selling me a gear box for nothing basically ($100, about 75,000). Can you please tell me what I need to do in order to make this work. New TCU or vrx ECU? In either case I can get it from his vrx.

Thanks

Don't forget the dash and the gear mount plate from his VRX as well. Also, the TCU is
embeded in the ECU so you'll need his ECU and while you are at it, take his engine as well
as your TJ probably only has the 150kw motor instead of the 155kw tweaked motor which
is what the ECU is programmed for.

I thought the only difference between the 150kw and 155kw engines WAS the ECU. which means, when he installs the new ECU, it'll increase the power of his 3.5L to 155kw.

other than the ECU, there's no difference in the engines.

All TJ 3.5's have the same engine (except the ralliart), its the ECU that is different between S1 and S2 models....

DAMMIT WOOKIEE! Beat me to it.

I know this will sound stupid, just a question, piggy back ecu wouldnt help to get around ECU changing issue(haltech)?

no. the reason you need the 5sp auto ECU is to control the gearbox. piggy back ECUs don't typically have the required control units to run gearboxes.

the Mitsu ECU is really an ECU + TCU (transmission control unit) combined into one.

it's just another thing you can grab from your mates wrecked VRX. if he's concerned about it, offer to give him yours when you've completed the swap.

You will also need the BEM, Body Electronics module, and the keys.
There is a specific section in the workshop manual about changing electronic components.

Best list would be :-
Gearbox,
Wiring loom - not sure if any of the connectors are different
ECU
BEM
Keys.
