Hi all
I was driving along yesterday letting my mind wonder and thought of this... which, I have no answer for.

thinking about the cost of fuel... what would happen if i removed the tailshaft from my TL AWD. now I am not really going to do this, i was just wondering if it is possible and what would the effect be.

would my fuel consumption go down fro 13-14s to that of a FWD. of would the computer screw up.

cheers

I suppose it can be done, but i think the gear ratios are different in the awd and you still have the weight of the drivline too.

Yes its less rotational mass on the motor and driveline, so maybe a little improvement. it would be marginal. You would get better numbers/hp at the front wheels as i wouldn't be divided by 4.

And i'm not sure but would you not loose the tranfer case oil by removing the shaft? or has it an output shaft on the case/box?

all of you power will go straight out the out put for the rear axle!! that is waht will happen.

Wouldnt it be the same as if you had a snapped CV shaft in a FWD, all the power goes out the way of the least resistance, and since there would be no resistance on the rear shaft then it would basically sit there spinning..........

Note: I could be completely ****ing wrong here.....

a more fun way of doing it, would be to remove the CV shafts going to the FRONT WHEELS!

then we would all have what we want - a REAR wheel drive magna / verada! :bowrofl: :bowrofl:

i spose you *could* do it... need to remove the shaft from the very front of the transfere case (if making it FWD) so that it doesnt try to send any drive south...
would prolly have to mod the front diff too, to make it work best..

EDIT - if you did do it.. fuel consumption would prolly be pretty close to the same.. its still having to lug around all that AWD extra weight - even if it wasnt "in use" kinda thing

Hmmm... If your power will 'leak out' then why is it VR4 AWD boxes can have their output shaft holes sealed off to just run FWD?

i think what 'leak out' means is that the engine will send power thru the tranny, and it will send power to the wheels which are still connected... but most will go thru the gearing that sends power the rear wheels kinda thing - it would free spin the output shaft to the rear wheels.

the VR4 AWD boxes must be different boxes to those used in our maggy / rada's

They have to modify the transfer case for this.

They have to modify the transfer case for this.
Thanks for that Phonic, didn't realise.

If that is the case, then surely this can be done to the fagna transfer case.

isnt the purpose of an lsd to supply more power to the path of most resistance as the path of most resistance is obviously the path with the most grip ?
