3inch stainless from cat back with carbon fibre cannon.
Nowhere near as loud as i was expecting. easily do a long trip with it as it doesn't drone.
oh and no it's not touching the fuel tank its just the angle of the photo.

thats gotta be the best looking cannon on a magna to date
ARS55

cost me a total of $450 (probably cause i'm an exhaust fitter and did it all myself) which was cost of the parts.

Awesome man :)
I wanna see a whole rear end shot of it.
It fills up the hole nicely.

i agree - one of the best cannons on a magna.
your fuel tank seems to have to have taken a bit of a bashing over the course of your cars life!

NICE WORK!!! from a fellow fabfricator.... looks like you used mig? did you change the wire?
EDIT and that should be loud as brother... i dont know how its Acceptable, like the 'no drone' factor... no middle muffler or anything....

no thats tig. just haven't cleaned the **** from around the welds (soot marks) so they look quite large.

Are you just gunna pickle? or you gunna do the full buff?
ARS55
23-01-2008, 05:10 PM
if i pickle it i will have to buff for sure.
probably going to linish the weld smooth and polish the whole thing.
pain in the ARS55 cause the straight pipe was polished and the bends were not
Trotty
23-01-2008, 05:25 PM
Not always the case... if you just want the burn marks gone the pickle is good...
But sounds like you know what your doin...

how did you do the cut out in the bar...did it crack the paint at all?
ARS55
23-01-2008, 05:29 PM
i used an air-saw (air powered hack saw)
basically a hack saw blade snapped in half, moves in and out. gives the same result as a coping saw but much quicker.
no cracks in the paint.

looks quite good chief. But the offset of the cannon looks strange, very far over to the side of the rear bar
ARS55
23-01-2008, 05:40 PM
yeah it's got a towbar under there and to get the cannon as far up in the bumper as i did i had to run it beside the end of the towbar. otherwise it would have to had been under the bumper and i think that just looks ugly IMO.

moreso than anything it has widened my torque band. i used to has a peak power that was really noticeable, now it just pulls hard right through the rev range but doesn't have a necessary peak RPM, it just keeps wanting to go with out a drop off.
the reason i chose the carbon fibre cannon is mainly because of the fact that the car is black (well pretty much) and it suited it well.
as previously stated, i thought it was going to be alot louder than it is. easy way to describe it is this, i highly doubt that cops would turn their heads to look if i drove past them at anything under 3/4 throttle. i'm really surprised at the volume, and i've been an exhaust fitter/fabricator for almost 7 years now.
next step, induction.....

23-01-2008, 08:23 PM
nice. ive got dual cannons. but they hang below the bar and i cant stand it.
it looks crap.
might look into cutting the bar and moving the muffler a bit.
ARS55
23-01-2008, 08:38 PM
cutting the bar was no big deal for me cause i simply don't care.
if i don't like it in the future i can replace it plain and simple.
thanx for all the positive comments guys.
oh and the guys asking for me to do their exhaust, don't make the mistake of saying "yeah just go crazy with it" unless you want this sort of result or similar...
http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/4056/s3700004zr8.jpg
note the size of the tip, a good friend of mine said pretty much those words above and ended up with that, 6inch tip!!!! was an offcut off my old boss's boat exhaust...
he was happy with it after hearing it (being a Kiwi makes him patrially insane) but was a shock when first viewed.....

Great install! Looks very neat, almost OEM...
Just a quick one, is a 3" cat back recommended over 2.5" cat back? i got a 3.5L and am now inspired...
ARS55
24-01-2008, 03:31 PM
it really depends on how far you intend to go with it and what you want out of your exhaust.
i just wanted to basically go a bit stupid with it and free up the engine a bit more than what the 2.5inch system would as my engine was running out of puff at the 5400rpm mark. now it just wanting to keep on going past that.
also i went with the 3inch because i wanted a deep note, which i got and i'm going to be making extractors to suit. when i am done with the whole system it will be suited to a top end N/A or supercharged motor.
if you plan on going for an average setup i would recomend you stick with the 2.5inch pipework.

Well i wont be charging my car, but i do notice that it does die off near that 5500rpm mark.
Another noob quetion what is a Lukey LR2779 as opposed to a straight-through setup like yours? Performance differences?
ARS55
24-01-2008, 03:53 PM
i haven't dealt with lukey much but i can look into it for you if you like?
basically when it comes to mufflers, the only difference in straight through sports mufflers is the note/DB level.
there is no difference in performance whatsoever.
it's just a perforated tube through a casing. the different sounds come from different perforation size and positioning.

if you are looking at a lukey unit i have one myself nice note a drones a tad at 2500 other then that its nice and beefy and not loud enough to wake the neighbours hehe, youi could get the lr4-5597 (i think thats it) which is the complete rear section of the standard exhaust which uses a LR2779 as the muffler, its a bolt on unit and can do it yourself at home with a spanner socket set and a set of car ramps.

Are you relocating back to Brisbane any time soon?? I'm looking at getting the exact same setup on my car (minus the cannon, but that's just personal preference), and after seeing those pics -
I'd be more than happy to part with my hard earned 1st year apprentice wage for a job like that.

ok video is up on youtube. you can either search for it, type in mistubishi magna exhaust, look for the longer of the 3 videos by 'whistlinggopher'. you will probably have to wait for the video to be activated which should be done by the morning or wait til i post the direct link to it.
video is firstly bonnies exhaust then mine. i did both of them so let me know what you guys think.

yeah the video is vey decieving in the way it sounds. i really need to get some 'on the fly' video to give a better sample.
and yeah the exhaust is only cat back at this stage, going to make some extractors up in the next month or so and will be using a high flow 3inch cat. having the system 3inch all the way will more than likely make it drone a bit.
and for the last time no it doesn't drone now. When i'm driving normally it sounds no louder than a 2.5inch system, the only difference is when i open it up...

Looks great.. i bet it would sound allright.... 'lil unsure of a 3" exhaust w/ only a cannon though... loud? :doubt:
Im still tossing up what i should do to my exhaust..
2.5" stainless, 3" stainless, 3" mild... Just dont know...

Interesting how you said the power increase is low to midrange, where up high its quite similar. When I put my new exhaust on, 2.5inch cat back, mandrel bent, I noticed no difference down low, but more in the upper mid, to top end range. Interesting I must say
Your car sounds nice, i dont mind it at all. Mine sounds a little deeper, bit less raspy, bit more gruntier, but then again minds mild, not stainless.
For the record, my exhaust is a 2.5inch at cat back, with twin resinators, no muffler.
However, how long have you had the exhaust for, because mine lost its raspyness as it carboned up

The sound is very smooth. It doesn't sound tinny at all, simply a typical magna rattle every now and then. And unfortunately the video just doesn't do it justice. You really have to hear it in the flesh to get an idea of what it really sounds like.
