Hi,
I'm new here and I am looking at buying a 1998 TF Magna advance from a friend. She is going to trade it in, and i have offered to buy it for the trade in offer or a bit more. Roughly what price would she get from a dealer if she traded it in? Also, I have driven it a lot, and am a bit curious about the auto transmission. Occasionally when it changes gears, usually at higher revs, there is a slight jolt on the upshift. As it is the only magna i have driven i have no idea if this is normal. It is still a smooth transmission, so maybe I am being fussy and finding a fault that is not really there.
Sorry about the long post
Thanks for any help you can provide

mine does the same and it's a TH so newer so yeah it's fairly normal... long as its not throwing the car just a slight jolt is ok... possibly her ECU has been trained to driving hard nad wants to take off quickly... may be able to rectify by reseting the ECU and driving modestly

yeah ive noticed a jolt like that in my mums tf advance. i think it mostly happens when you drive it hard and when you start driving it normally it holds the gear a bit longer cause it adapted to you drivng hard.

Thanks for the advice guys. The info on the auto is reassuring, I have noticed that it is a bit jolty after doing some spirited driving through the hills and then going back to gentle city driving.
As for the value, it has 113000 kays, and is straight, aside from a few scratches here and there. I was thinking $9000, so 6-8 grand is looking positive.
Cheers

Ey man dont know where you pulled 6-8 grand from... how about getting some facts before you say something?
The redbook listed trade in price (Which is worked off actual figures) is $8,200 - $10,000
And if the auto is a bit jolty/slippy, you will most likely find that getting it serviced would help a heap!
Good luck with ur purchase :)

The autos have a mind of their own I reckon. Mines a TJ and it jolts from 3rd to 4th quite bad (especially when lifting off the throtte), and if cruising at 4th for a while and need to kickdown to say overtake (ie. freeway driving), its more like a BANG down to 3rd. The first time it happened, it scared the shit out of me! ) Sometimes its smooth, sometimes its not.
To get mine to shift smooth, i need to reset the ECU just about every weekend. Usually do it whilst cleaning the car.

hmmmm am i the only one with a tf that has 74 thousand kms on it??
Mine was picked up a year ago for 14500... RIP off.. but it did have low kms and was perfect inside and out (besides scratched tinting which i didnt see....)
Hmm red book does say trade in.. but also says anywhere to $12000 for a good condition car!
Again back to the resale value of my magna..
i think its in Perfect Condition.. and for it to be worth 9 grand is a joke!
It looks better than many of the commodores and falcons ive been in and feels.. and looks better in the interior department!

Update.
She is now asking $12000 or maybe even $13000. She is trying to cover the amount outstanding on her loan ($11000) plus have some extra for a change over. I think this is pretty steep for a TF advance with 115000 kays that still needs the major service done.
What do you guys think?

Vanillaway too steep!!!! she won't get more than $8000 for that thing on a trade in, garuanteed!! and that would be only if she got ripped off on the new car!!! the most you'ld pay for that is $9000 i reckon, maybe $10K if you're feeling generous!!! I know this is your friend but you could pick up the same car for a heaps better price!!!

That is an extremely steep price. As for the auto jolting - it can happen after driving it too hard, or manually shifting gears... it just means a minor transmission service is needed (around $160-200).

The most I would pay for it would be around $9000. If she is asking for anything over $10,000 it's pretty steep and anything over $11,000? Well tell her to take her hand off it

i'd definitely say $9000 max...we bought our 3.5l th about 9 months back for $10,700 and the TH magnas are even cheaper, so more than $9000 is a bit steep. But then again some people pay a bit more if the car is in great condition.
