Here's an odd one for you.

I picked up a 2002 KJ Verada GTV last week and thought I'd give it an oil change first off.

Warmed it up, drained the oil & removed the filter - left it a while to drain to make sure that it was all out. So far, all OK, just a normal oil change...

Filled it up - only took 4 litres after starting & topping up for the oil filter. It's supposed to take 4.7 litres I believe, so this doesn't make a lot of sense.

The other thing I noticed is that the oil still looks dirty. I can only think that there was some oil (about 3/4 of a litre) kept in the engine somewhere and that it has contaminated the new oil.

Any ideas how this could happen?

I did have it jacked up with the RH front wheel off to get at the sump plug, but I lowered the jack to make sure that all the oil drained from the sump - and in any case I don't see how it could retain that much oil unless it was lifted about a metre...

G'day,
I have a TW had have noticed the same when refilling my oil?? Wonder if it is because some is left in the oil pump and the cylinder head wells? Anyone confirm?

The last service was done at 69k by a Mitsu dealer, so I guess it would have been done then.

Got to say it's a first for me & I've changed oil on at least 8 other cars in the past, including my old KS Verada.

Apart from wondering where the oil is hiding (!) I don't want to leave dirty oil in there to contaminate the new stuff.

3.5s take 4.2-4.3 litres when refilling. 3.7 if using the original filter.

Its impossible to drain every last drop. 4.7 would be a dry figure. The sump plug isnt right on the bottom for a start and there is still oil in the sump after draining.
